Resistance to Innovation – What if electric cars came first? "In his acclaimed book the 'The Diffusion of Innovations'—the most-cited work in all the social sciences—Everett Rogers explained how innovations frequently meet resistance. Resistance that isn’t always rational. How all-too-often we’re willing to accept the status quo despite its flaws and reject new options despite their benefits. We’re seeing exactly this phenomenon with electric vehicles. Demand from what Rogers identified as the early adopters—wealthy buyers who can pay a premium for the newest technology—has largely been met. The challenge now is to reach a broader market of buyers with more practical concerns about cost, range, reliability, and safety. News articles and commentary are popping up noting those concerns and expressing doubts about just how useful electric cars really are. The lack of charging stations, the environmental impact of mining lithium, the danger of battery fires, and potential strains to the electrical grid. There are some legitimate concerns, but how much of that skepticism is grounded in the reality of electrification and how much is good old-fashioned resistance to change?" Behind the crazy rise is the logic of the capital market's bet on the technological iteration of the electric vehicle battery industry. The direct cause of the rise in QuantumScape was an announcement by PowerCo SE, the battery subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. PowerCo SE has demonstrated that QuantumScape's anodeless solid-state battery sample can be charged and discharged 1,000 times, and the battery has "almost no aging" at the end of the test, still maintaining 95% capacity (or discharge energy retention rate). PowerCo SE explains that for an electric car with a range of 500-600 km, 1,000 charges and discharges means that the car has run more than 500,000 km (while the battery is close to lossless). They spent months in Salzgie's lab to carry out the test. These results were also warmly praised by PowerCo SE CEO Frank Blome, who said, "These very encouraging results impressively confirm the potential of solid-state batteries. The end result of this development could be a battery cell capable of supporting long distances, super-fast charging, and virtually not aging. Recently, media reports revealed that GEELY's CEO Gan Jiayue internally disclosed the progress of Geely's #allSolidState battery research and development during the mid-year management conference. It is understood that Geely's self-developed full solid-state battery has achieved an energy density of #400Wh/kg, and the battery cell preparation has been completed with a capacity of #20AH, potentially becoming the first to be announced, mass-produced, and installed in vehicles. Geely has long had a presence in the solid-state battery field, and according to previous media reports, China may invest approximately 6 billion yuan in full solid-state battery research and development. Among the six enterprises that may receive government support for basic research and development, Geely is one of them. The other five enterprises are CATL, BYD, FAW, SAIC, and Weilan New Energy.

Session on emerging battery technology this afternoon with Harry Dempsey posing the questions to Susanne Bjärsvik Stephen Gifford and Will Hudson. Cost and charging time are the key focus areas currently, seeing advancement in different chemistry’s however it’s just one aspect of the technology. Range anxiety has started to ease but defining how much range is enough range is hard because every consumer sees this differently. Silicon is a new material that will play a role in battery advancement. The Faraday Institution is focused on research in this space and exploring what battery capacity is needed in the UK along with how we create that capacity. Two fundamental technologies they are working on, solid state which could have more longevity, quicker charging and safer. The other is sodium which are less energy dense but more abundance of materials make them cheaper which could play a role in lower cost vehicle segment. Sodium factories already exist in China with a view to bringing product to market in the next few years and we’re likely to see both within the next 5 years however for what purpose is to be defined. 🔋 Exciting developments in the solid-state battery realm Recently, QuantumScape's stock soared as Volkswagen confirmed the durability of QS's solid-state battery in PowerCo's tests—over 1000 charge cycles with over 95% capacity retained. This outperforms current lithium-ion batteries, typically degrading by 20% after 800-1200 cycles. Meanwhile, Maxell from Japan also claimed success with cylindrical solid-state batteries boasting a 200mAh capacity, sample set for shipment in January 2024. Solid-state batteries, heralded as the next-gen technology, promise over a thousand kilometers of range, superior charging rates, and extended lifespan. I came across this quite interesting post on a NIO 46105 cell, which was published end of last year. NIO's cell caught my attention as it combines a high nickel chemistry with a high strength aluminium shell.
