Have you heard of The Clean Vessel Act (CVA)? It was signed into law to protect the health and safety of our oceans and waterways in 1992. The CVA reduces water pollution by prohibiting vessels from discharging raw sewage into freshwater or coastal saltwater. The act established a federal grant program, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to fund sewage disposal facilities (pump-out stations). Florida Sea Grant, in partnership with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, develops tools and resources that empower the boating community to properly dispose of waste and keep our water clean. Florida Boaters can find local-pump out stations using the Pumpout Nav app. The app will confirm if a station is working and the hours of operation. Choosing to “pump out not dump out” raw sewage not only means you are obeying the law, but also protecting: 🪸 Fish habitats 🐚 Shellfish beds that are important economically and environmentally 🎣 Safe fishing and swimming areas If you are a Florida boater, please fill out this survey to help Florida Sea Grant gain a better understanding of your knowledge of boating activities and practices. I appreciate what these forums attempt to do regarding alternatives and best practices for winter maintenance. However, I've yet to see injury lawyers and procurement representatives responsible for changing the language in maintenance contracts at these forums. Adding lines to contracts like 'bare and clear at all times' or 'visible deicing material present on all surfaces' undermines the best practices operators are trying to implement. The industry has gotten more and more litigious, most notably in Ontario. Service level expectations have been raised to levels that have been trying to create an absolute out of randomness that comes with weather events. Education, understanding, and collaboration require engaged and active participation from all stakeholders. Landscape Ontario (along with other provinces), SIMA, and Smart About Salt have been pushing the agenda forward with the necessary changes. Hopefully, everyone will come on board and work together to ensure the plan sticks. It would also help if news outlets like The Weather Network stopped calling 5 cm snowfalls "STORM WATCH" and changing the background colour to bright red !😊

BEWARE, Do Not Camp in this kind of Places. 1. Industrial areas: These areas can pose safety hazards due to machinery, chemicals, and other industrial activities. 2. High-traffic areas: Camping near busy roads or highways can be noisy and dangerous. 3. Private property without permission: Trespassing on private property is illegal and can result in fines or other consequences. 4. Wetlands or marshes: These areas can be environmentally sensitive and may have regulations prohibiting camping to protect the ecosystem. 5. Steep cliffs or rocky terrain: Camping in these areas can be hazardous due to the risk of falls or rockslides. 6. Areas prone to flooding: Camping in flood-prone areas can be dangerous during heavy rains or storms. 7. Wildlife habitats: Camping in areas inhabited by dangerous animals can pose risks to both humans and wildlife. 8. File under MOTHER'S DAY FISHING OPENER! This weekend is Minnesota's annual Fishing Opener held every Mother's Day weekend! Just make sure new Moms don’t eat the fish! The Governor will kick off the celebration this Friday in Lake City, Minnesota, a place with a long history of water-related tourism, including fishing, swimming, sailing, and its also the birthplace of water skiing! OH, THE IRONY ... Lake Pepin, the crown jewel of Lake City, is a large swollen section of the Mississippi River, just downstream from the Twin Cities, is listed as one of Minnesota's "impaired waters." Indeed, many of the upstream waterways that feed into Lake Pepin have been placed on this List, established by the federal Clean Water Act. Why is it impaired? Historically, the Lake has been polluted by agricultural runoff from excess fertilizer applications and tile drainage and soil erosion from fencerow-to-fencerow tilling of the land causing high levels of sedimentation and nutrient loading in this wider, slower moving section of the Mississippi River which negatively impacts the depth of the Lake for river transportation and water quality for safe drinking, fishing and habitat for biodiversity. In addition to fertilizer and sedimentation impacts to Lake Pepin there are also more toxic pollutants from pesticide runoff from agriculture production (ironically, no-till which is meant to reduce sedimentation is often accompanied by the us of more herbicides and pesticides to offset the benefits of tilling, e.g., pest control). Another, even more toxic pollutant was only recently found ... "The 3M chemicals that contain PFOS, PFOA, and other PFAS were produced in Minnesota at the 3M Chemolite facility in Cottage Grove." "From the 1950s through the early 1970s, 3M disposed of wastes from PFAS manufacturing primarily at four locations." Wait for it... "In late 2003 ( 💡 !), the MPCA discovered PFAS in groundwater at and near some of these disposal sites." "In 2004, PFAS were found to have contaminated drinking water supplies in parts of the eastern. Further investigations identified an area of groundwater contamination covering more than 150 square miles and affecting the drinking water supplies of more than 💢 140,000 💢 Minnesotans." And, its polluted the fish -- many residents, often minorities or impoverished communities catch and EAT 💡 ! "For all fish species in Mississippi River Pools 2-4 and all of the Minnesota lakes and backwaters: 💀 Do not eat fish -- sensitive populations, including people who are or may become pregnant, people who are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed, and children under age 15. 🤕 Limit consumption to one serving a month if not planning to become pregnant, men and boys over age 15." And ... "While this guidance primarily looks at PFAS, it is protective for mercury, PCBs." Less we forget! So what about those folks who rely on MN waterways for subsistence or its part of their culture?
