Outstanding Leadership always makes a difference.
I’ve been retired from policing for just over 1 year now and am happy to report: “it’s great”. I spent many years (elected by my peers) on the Executive Board of the Victoria City Police Union (VCPU) and always found that work some of the most satisfy. As my career came to an end, I spent considerable time getting the “True Blue Podcast” up and running. It can be found on Apple, Spotify or Google and all episodes are available on the VCPU website. https://truebluevic.ca/ I wanted to share the most recent episode and encourage you to listen. https://lnkd.in/g2UbGk5X The guest is Staff Sergeant John Musicco – he is an amazing human being. I’m honoured to have work with John and will tell anyone that I think he represents the awesome people who put on the uniform and protect society from mayhem everyday. Now in retirement, staying involved in podcasting will be part of my therapy after a long policing career. In between rounds of golf at Royal Colwood Golf Club of course! https://lnkd.in/gqy5QPxw

Delivering the keynote address at the Canterbury Christ Church University Centre for Policing Research’s annual conference, Kent Police Chief Constable Tim Smith identified the problems facing policing at a national and local level – including concerns about politicisation, funding challenges, and a highly inexperienced workforce post-Uplift, as Policing Insight’s James Sweetland reports. ❝We see more and more extreme comments about what we’re doing; it’s almost like the next individual has to be more sensationalist than the last. And that is having a big effect on policing, because it’s a distraction for us.❞ - CC Tim Smith, Kent Police ❝Most senior officers told us that they experience what they believe to be improper pressure or interference from significant political figures, whether through direct contact or through the media.❞ - HMCIC Andy Cooke ❝The rate at which we’ve pumped in inexperienced, brand-new cops into our frontline has had an obvious effect. The overall percentage of our staff on frontline teams with under five years’ experience peaked at about 80%. That’s huge.❞ - CC Tim Smith, Kent Police ❝Effectively I don’t get enough money to pay everybody’s wages, which is a bit bizarre. But other forces actually get more money than the amount of staff they have. That needs looking at.❞ - CC Tim Smith, Kent Police ❝Courts, unlike policing, aren’t really geared up to deal with huge flexes and surges in demand. They’re not designed like that. In policing, we’re very used to it. Here in Kent, it’s probably the worst in the country sadly.❞ - CC Tim Smith, Kent Police ❝Our procurement has to be slicker and quicker. And for that to work, we have to come together nationally to do it. National support and investment in operational enablers is perhaps the biggest one for me.❞ - CC Tim Smith, Kent Police [SUBSCRIBER ARTICLE] https://lnkd.in/ePVcugqj #lawenforcement #policing #police
