They're gearing up for a charity skydive to raise funds to combat loneliness amongst older adults in our communities. At Home Instead, we envision a world where older adults can continue to play an active and inclusive role in society. Through thoughtful social activities and companionship, we aim to empower them to live happy, healthy, and connected lives. The highlight of my week was Sussex Community Foundation's #SussexintheCity event. 132 people came to hear Torsten Bell of Resolution Foundation talk about the impact of the #costofliving crisis on ordinary families, and we explained how UK Community Foundations, are supporting vital local charities that are giving hope for the future. Torsten showed that inflation affects the poorest people most - many people find their budgets just do not cover their most basic needs. When times are tight most of us go to a cheaper supermarket, or buy own brands. But if you are already shopping at the cheapest place, there is nowhere to go but to skip meals. Many mothers are missing meals so that their children can eat. This is why we need local charities to help in this emergency. This crisis is deep, and urgent. It is also long lasting. But we can make a difference - by supporting your local community foundation you can help local charities today and for the long term, and truly change people's lives. #philanthropy #sussexinthecity #charity #communityfoundations

What charities are people most motivated to donate to? This year there has been a shift in the rankings. Children’s charities (46%) is the highest, maintaining a position in the top three since 2016. Mental health has ascended to second place (42%), entering the top three causes for the first time, with the proportion who are motivated to support this cause growing steadily from 29% in 2017 to 42% today. The reason donors might give can change depending on global and local events. For example, disaster response in Australia saw a large spike due to the 2019-2020 bushfires. We are seeing an increase in younger donors being less loyal to one charity, with cause being a key driver to engagement, more so than familiarity with the charity or brand legacy. The holiday season is here—and for some, presents aren’t the only gifts. Charitable nonprofits are wrapping up 2023 with an influx of donations as taxpayers look to spread cheer while also taking advantage of donor tax benefits before the year ends. The holiday season reminds us of the role nonprofits play in improving the quality of life for individuals, communities and governments. Federal and state lawmakers recognize the value of incentives to support charitable giving. A little Friday morning brain food - although I am afraid its not easy or uplifting. Research by colleagues at Charities Aid Foundation has shown that 40% of UK charities are operating at capacity, and over 1 in 10 are actively turning people away. At a time when many of us need help, the relentless impact of rising prices, a difficult donation environment and 3 years of challenge has put our UK charities under stress. This isn't about the "nice to does." This is about the basic services that underpin our communities. The foodbanks, the medical helplines, the mental health services, the homeless support. It is about our communities. So, two Friday asks. If over this weekend you think of a cause which is important to you. One that resonates, one that you understand; think about how you can help. It might be a small donation, an offer to volunteer or simply sharing key messages. Secondly, take a look at the research and think about how it impacts, and perhaps how you can help longer term.
