Bon voyage, Kate! 👋🏻 Luckily for us, the amazingly talented Kate Allen isn't leaving Organic permanently today. But we are losing her for a bit, as tomorrow she begins an 8 week sabbatical - doing all manner of good things in Africa. Offering sabbatical leave comes with challenges for a business. There’s operational disruption, a loss of expertise, an impact on the workload of others in the team, a potential financial cost, and, of course, the risk that the person taking the sabbatical might never return… 😳 But in reality, most of these risks can be mitigated with careful planning, clear policies and open communication. Plus I’d argue that the risks are outweighed by some hefty gains that come from offering a sabbatical leave policy: 💡 It’s good for employee well-being 💡 It brings fresh ideas and perspectives into the business 💡 It helps attract the brightest and the best (it says all the right things about your business to potential candidates) 💡 And it helps retain the brightest and the best too (providing options to those who might otherwise feel compelled to leave your company for good) Have an amazing time away, Kate - we can’t wait to see the photos!

THE ART OF THE CORPORATE SABBATICAL - Dale Meise ACMA, GCMA Dale is a corporate animal. He’s an accountant with lengthy tenures at big multinationals such as Unilever and Heineken. Despite this, he has somehow managed to take three separate sabbaticals of 3 months, 10 months and 12 months during his career so far. He used these 25 months to do what he loves: travel the world. In this talk, he discussed his journey, why he chose the path of regular sabbaticals, and how he was able to afford it and uproot himself each time. He also discussed the trade-offs he encountered that came with this lifestyle choice, specifically in relation to his career and stability.

After an Unexpected Sabbatical, We are back with Rule Number 6 from The 12 Rules of Life by Dr. Jordan B. Peterson. It Says: "Put your Own House in Perfect Order before you Criticize the World." This Rule is Applicable in Our Daily Lives as it Prioritizes our Circle of Concerns. Most People, when they want to put in their Contribution for the Betterment of the World, start thinking about it too far out of their Circle of Influence and End up getting Discouraged by the Sheer magnificence of their Dream. Instead, If all of us, Start by Improving Ourselves, then our homes, then our Immediate Communities, We are gradually Turning the World into a better place from right where we are. That way, If the time comes where we have to change the World, we will be able to do so as we would have done it many times before, within our Own Reach. So, Fix yourself, clean your Room, Help your Family before trying to solve Global Issues and soon you will be able to solve The Global Issues. Our “Phoenix rising from the ashes” turned 15 today. I am not sure if companies have birthdays, or just anniversaries; I think the answer is probably different for each organization. For me, it’s a little bit of both. Solairus has been as much a child to me for the last 15 years as it has been a vocation or a job. For most of us, it has also unquestionably been a passion project filled with a lot of hard work, sacrifice and some amazing experiences and rewards. And we all know that aviation years are a little bit like dog years… The dark, post-2008-financial crisis days of March ’09 feel like a long time ago. In that time, those early “plank owners” who helped us launch the company (many of whom are still with Solairus) have been joined by thousands of other talented teammates, all who now feel like extended family. Our success back in 2009 – as it does even now in 2024 – relied upon our ability to engage a large group of highly capable people in rowing, in unison, towards a common destination. This organization simply would not be who, what or where it is today without each of them and the work they do 24/7/365 on behalf of our managed clients - and one another. I am not one for looking in the rearview mirror or resting on laurels; It makes me uncomfortable, quite frankly, and I have always considered the windshield to be a lot more exciting to look through. But the experiences, lessons and moments in our shared rearview mirror can certainly inform and help craft the journey ahead, and we are smart to keep half-an-eye on them. As we have since day one, we will remain ever-committed to the notion that the success of our business is deeply rooted in Solairus people, not the planes we manage, and that we will only thrive in the long term through taking care of those who take care of the company every day: our team and our clients. We are grateful to have had amazing support from the aviation industry at large. Our vendors, training partners, FBOs, MROs, OEMs – even our competitors - all of whom we view as friends and colleagues… Many of them took risks and gambles in supporting our launch in those early days of 2009. We have been extremely fortunate for those relationships. They have each played a role in the Solairus story, and will only play a larger one as our company grows stronger and stronger in the years ahead.
