🌙 Exciting developments in space exploration and ethics! 🚀 In 2023, we had to think about AI-created issues; now, in 2024, we also need to think beyond our planet. I came across an intriguing article today that raises an important question about the human footprint on the moon. 🌍 The Navajo Nation has recently raised objections to the inclusion of human remains on the moon during a forthcoming space mission. 🙅♂️💔 For the Navajo and other Indigenous tribes, the moon holds deep cultural and spiritual significance, making the placement of human remains a profound desecration. While the White House held a meeting to address these concerns, it reinforced that it cannot dictate the cargo carried by private space companies. We are quick to forget that outer space also contains its own fragile ecosystems. While often absent from headlines, the ongoing commodification and militarisation of outer space is rapidly accelerating, posing significant threats to outer space’s (as yet) largely uninterrupted natural environment, as well as life on earth. While the potential economic benefits from space exploitation may be significant, has climate change not taught us anything about human interference with the environment, and the inevitable consequences of so doing? How can we estimate the consequences of poorly regulated interference with the celestial order, including the sun and the moon, which are essential to the maintenance and habitability of our planet? The international community is at high risk of repeating potentially disastrous historical mistakes. NASA's Europa Clipper mission, launching later this year, aims to explore Jupiter's moon Europa, believed to harbor a vast saltwater ocean beneath its icy crust, making it a prime candidate for supporting life. This $5 billion mission, reaching Jupiter in 2030, will join the European Space Agency's Juice mission in assessing Europa's habitability. While not directly searching for life, the missions will investigate the moon's chemical, physical, and geological conditions for life's potential. Discovering life on Europa would significantly impact our understanding of life's ubiquity in the universe, suggesting Earth is not unique in hosting life. Today, January 3rd, is Perihelion Day, a special day for everyone on Earth. It's when our planet is closest to the sun in 2024. On this day, Earth is about 3 million miles nearer to the sun compared to when it's farthest away, called the aphelion. Today, Earth will be around 91.4 million miles from the sun. Research from the University of California, Berkeley, reveals that sunlight is about 7% more intense during perihelion, which is when Earth is closest to the Sun, compared to aphelion, the farthest point in its orbit.
