Traditional media expectations and #influencers continue to bump up against each other in very public ways, especially in the hospitality space. This Eater recap/analysis of the recent Keith Lee (high profile TikToker) visit to Atlanta is a worthy read on the continuing intersection of social media and restaurant criticism. In some ways, it's like the Wild West: Are their rules? Who sets the rules? What is the truth? Who's version of the truth are we seeing/reading? If you're a business that is the subject of less-than-favorable public feedback, what is your internal/external reaction? (Having a strategic #PR team engaged will certainly help navigate those choppy waters.)

Rachel Sutherland Communications is fired up to welcome Taylor Mumma to the team as a public relations strategist. Taylor is a Raleigh native who made the Queen City her home in 2020 while pursuing her BA in Communications at University of North Carolina at Charlotte (go Niners!). She enjoys sharing the stories of the amazing individuals that make Charlotte the vibrant city it is, and working closely with small businesses, restaurants, and organizations, helping them cultivate meaningful relationships with their audiences. Outside of the office, you’ll find her hitting up the latest food spots around town or exploring the city with her partner and their three-year-old Golden Retriever, Finnegan.

Inspired: This trip, the people, the energy, the intention. I'm grateful for the opportunity to visit Washington DC with DifferenceMakers CLT through Communities In Schools of Charlotte Mecklenburg, Inc and The Gambrell Foundation. Community members engaged with 25 remarkable high school students over a whirlwind three day trip to DC, exchanging ideas, sharing stories, laughing, learning and experiencing social capital in real time. It's easy to let *gestures wildly* all this get you down and distracted. Instead, I came back to Charlotte energized, inspired and optimistic (tired too, but in a good way). Encouraging news for the city of Charlotte, with more work to be done! Rachel Sutherland Communications is honored to lead the communications strategy around this important news for Leading on Opportunity.
Opportunity Insights, the Harvard University-based research group led by Dr. Raj Chetty, today published “Changing Opportunity: Sociological Mechanisms Underlying Growing Class Gaps and Shrinking Race Gaps in Economic Mobility,” which shows Charlotte moved from No. 50 to 38 in economic mobility (the ability of children from low-income families to climb the income ladder and thrive). Charlotte is ranked No. 3 out of 50 on economic mobility progress, moving upward faster than peer cities. In addition, Mecklenburg is the only county in the country where low-income white children experienced no decline in economic mobility. “Charlotte is a city that in many ways has and continues to be ahead in our approach to community progress,” says Sherri Chisholm, Executive Director of Leading on Opportunity, an organization formed in 2017 in response to the initial study, which advocates for and tracks the progress in Charlotte that is often not readily available to the public. “We refused to accept our low ranking, and made a commitment to improve lives in Charlotte.” Read the Update: https://lnkd.in/eCZhY_id #EconomicMobility #CharlotteNorthCarolina #LeadingOnOpportunity #OpportunityInsights #Partnerships #Charlotte #Mecklenburg
