A tale of creative thinking in sales. In 1987 I was a senior manager at Arthur Young, now EY. Led by an old school partner I’d just pitched £80k for a FTSE 250 company’s audit. We didn’t get a sniff. Coopers & Lybrand, now PWC, pitched £60k which was aggressive. Arthur Anderson won it by pitching at £0k. Nada. Bubkas. Wow! On the condition they also got the client’s tax and special work. Aah. We’d all figured that was the real prize - much higher margin - but they were more creative, more focused, more serious. My boss declined the invitation to compete, in fact he didn’t even return the message I took offering us the chance to do so. Because in those days old school Big 8 partners didn’t lower themselves to sell. True that. Indeed in 2010 when I trained all the UK partners in a 2nd tier firm to sell, it was still a big part of the mindset shift I had to deliver in many of them. I had to ease them into the idea of selling by calling it business development. (They’re now top 8 globally). Nowadays in the Big 4 you don't make it unless you can sell. Sorry.
