Social Scientist | Planning, Economic Development, Housing | I help government, companies and social service agencies improve the quality of life for their residents.
Remember the time when the "new towns" initiative - funded by HUD- was working to support the building of 'Soul City'? Me neither! But I think many of you may find this work informative, and worth a look. Especially those focused on community building through an infusion of housing, education, economic development, health care, and safety. Watch below.
What can we do in our communities to ensure the unhoused are not facing additional challenges obtaining permanent housing due to arrests associated with living on the street?
• Communities should engage with local law enforcement to understand their policies and intentions moving forward.
•Create and maintain relationships with local law enforcement.
•Designate drop off sites for police officers encountering the homeless in lieu of arrest.
•Address the lack of available and affordable housing in communities, along with access to funding and support.
•Local social service agencies and CoC’s should continue to collaborate, partner, and focus on implementing action plans.
•Expand shelter capacity.
•Continue to make emergency shelters welcoming and ensure they are filled with necessary and engaging programming.
•Inceased legislative advocacy.

I am so proud of the work the Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission (MLTRC) is doing to shed light on buried episodes of racial terrorism in our state’s history while working with communities to create a path towards reconciliation. We just had our first lynching hearing — this one in Frederick County — in over a year, and it was nothing short of phenomenal but please don’t take my word for it.
The experts, the descendants, and the community members who testified were profound, passionate, and powerful. Despite the somber topic, witnessing this truth telling felt uplifting and restorative.
Please watch the hearing. Please spread the word. Please lift up these voices. I recommend starting at the 39 minute mark for a powerful presentation on the history of lynchings in Frederick County and the circumstances behind the lynchings of James Carroll in 1879, John Biggus in 1887, and James Bowen in 1895. https://lnkd.in/e6d9QTPp
Maryland is the first and only state to have a lynching truth and reconciliation commission. I am grateful to serve on it and grateful to live in a state that is unafraid to confront hard truths. We will be holding hearings in every MD county where a documented lynching occurred. If you live in MD, I encourage you to engage in the important work of this groundbreaking commission. We will need your support when we submit our report and recommendations for reconciliation to the MD State legislature. If you live outside of MD, consider petitioning your state legislature to create a commission like this.
As always, I am encouraged by the diversity of people who participated in this hearing. Don’t ever let anyone convince you that racial justice is a black versus white issue. There is room for everyone on the side of justice. Onward until victory is won and justice is done.
You can keep up with the work of the MLTRC here: https://lnkd.in/eUq4W2gv#blm#blacklivesmatter#truthandreconciliation#historymatters#marylandlynchingtruthandreconciliationcommission#civilrights#socialjustice
February 3, 1913. Wyoming ratified the Sixteenth Amendment to the US Constitution. They are the last of the three-fourths of states needed for ratification. The 16th Amendment granted Congress the power to levy an income tax without dividing it among the states or basing it on the United States Census.
This amendment enabled the federal government to fund programs and services that can be seen as fulfilling positive rights, such as Social Security and Medicare.
Let’s highlight that event again. The 16th Amendment to the Constitution fundamentally changed the premise of rights in America. Yes, we still have a right to protection from the government, or negative rights. But the 16th Amendment added positive rights. It enabled the government to act in the best interest of the people.
