Following US and Democratic Party Leader President Joe Biden's recent CNN presidential debate with his challenger, the Republican Party's Donald Trump, there is an interesting public discussion on the importance of real time fact-checking of political debates and speeches to hold politicians accountable for untruths. CNN did not fact-check the presidential debate in real time. The broadcaster did so only afterwards, saying "It is up to the candidates to challenge one another". Real time and post-speech fact-checking of politicians is critical to hold politicians accountable for untruths. Fact-checking is even more important in developing countries such as South Africa, where politicians deliberately lie, spread disinformation and cynically manipulate the past, and most citizens do not read, or read sparsely or are functionally illiterate - their reading skills are inadequate or they are fully illiterate. https://lnkd.in/dTNsMTs6

There's an odd dynamic that plays out when former President Donald Trump gives a campaign speech. Many news organizations have imposed a virtual blackout on his appearances. As a rule, they don't broadcast Trump's speeches live and often never report on them at all, even if a particular speech is newsworthy. When Trump won the Iowa caucuses, for example, Fox News carried his victory speech live, while CNN cut away from the speech when Trump discussed immigration, labeling his remarks "anti-immigrant rhetoric" unfit for CNN viewers. MSNBC did not broadcast the speech at all. MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, who devoted hundreds of hours of coverage to the false Steele dossier, told viewers that out of a deep reverence for the truth, MSNBC will not broadcast Trump speeches live. "There is a cost to us, as a news organization, of knowingly broadcasting untrue things," Maddow explained. "That is a fundamental truth of our business and who we are." The blackout has created a perverse incentive for the former president. If Trump says something outrageous from the podium, the news organizations will drop their bans and play that portion of the speech for the purpose of fact-checking and denouncing it. They then hold panel discussions on how terrible Trump is. If, on the other hand, Trump does not say something sufficiently outrageous -- crickets. So the way for Trump to win coverage, indeed, to dominate coverage on the networks that have blacked him out is to say something outrageous enough for them to put him on the air. Decades ago, when he was a New York businessman and, later, a television star, many observers said Trump operated by the old maxim that there is no such thing as bad publicity. One might think that in the current atmosphere, with Trump's level of notoriety, there is, in fact, such a thing as bad publicity. Being called a fascist or a racist or an authoritarian or a dictator -- surely that is worse than being ignored, right?

This article explains: https://lnkd.in/gak5w82W While not shown, I'd be willing to bet that legacy CNN, NYT, WaPo, MSNBC and most network TV and cable providers would be considered less credible and likeable than others options such as: 1) pond scum, 2) explosive diarrhea, 3) weasels, 4) colonscopies, and 5) the joyful, sincere laughter of Hillary and Kamala. PLEASE NOTE: I mean no disrespect to pond scum, weasels or diarrhea. 😏 So, if you have been relying on some of these media, it may be a good time to 'date around' a bit. Check out a few alternative sources of news and info like: X/Twitter, Newsmax, Joe Rogan, Christopher Rufo, Rumble, Substack, Tucker Carlson, Epoch Times or Coffee&Covid, to name just a few.

I'm no media critic, but I've written a lot about how the American media infrastructure doesn't seem up to the task of covering this year's election. I've also been thinking a lot about where the blame for that lies. It's easy to come for reporters with bylines or commentators and columnists, and I'm guilty of doing that. It's not the full story, however. I've realized that a lot of my frustrations should be directed at upper management. Because the same executives who have gutted newsrooms with layoffs and shut down outlets entirely also make hires like Ronna McDaniel. The organized resistance at NBC News was impressive. Everyone from union employees to Chuck Todd and Rachel Maddow leveraged their platforms to speak out and hold management accountable. I've always had a lot of respect for how NBC and MSNBC cover the issues I write about, and I know from talking to folks there that, as an organization, they generally do a better job of protecting journalists under threat from MAGA than a lot of other newsrooms. That culture might have contributed to the show of solidarity with one another as they held the line and fought for the integrity of their newsrooms. Voters deserve better than the political coverage we're currently getting, especially in terms of what the stakes of this election are. They need to understand that our rights and freedoms are being taken away, and once again, American Democracy is on the ballot. I don't necessarily object to hiring a political operative as a contributor, but Ronna McDaniel was involved in attempts to overturn a national election. The rhetoric she and her colleagues in Trump World regularly said about journalists incited violence and put journalists in danger. She shouldn't be a paid contributor on any network news program. Moving forward, I plan to be more careful in my media critiques. My baseline question: is this the fault of the people you see or the management you don't? The answer won't always be the latter, but I think it's important to always consider the question.

Mass Media bias and CANADIAN MEDIA. And the media, including the CBC, and ESPECIALLY CTV are for the most part right wing. The Liberals and the NDP need to come out swinging for the Canadian people. There is so much at risk with the potential for a Conservative government. Please support financially all Canadian media that come across if you can. Media that is factual and unbiased that tells two sides to every story. That was the first rule I learned in all my work in media Film/T.V.. Together we can support and elevate the truth <3
