See what we've been up to! Thanks to our recognised experience, RW Coldstore Construction took on the main contractor role and coldstore fit out of a 161,860sq ft warehouse unit in Yorkshire. We've worked closely with the very talented designers VOOR Architectural Design Ltd and we are all very pleased with the results so far. Project statistics: This build consists of two coldstores Coldstore #1 79m x 103m x 14.8m high and Coldstore #2 52m x 103m x 14.8m high As well as office, welfare, and canteen facilities. The Chocolate Works: a historic site for communities to flourish Today we're in York where this fascinating site was once filled with 2,500 local employees, before being transformed into a new residential-led development known as The Chocolate Works. Constructed in 1927, Bishopthorpe was the proud emblem of Terry’s incredible confectionary success, accommodating its transition from simple apothecary to fully-fledged, world-famous chocolatier. The factory was the beating heart of Terry’s operations, slowing down only for WWII, before reverting to full production in the 1950s – the decade in which the Chocolate Orange, arguably the business’ best-known product, was presented to the world for tapping and unwrapping. Sadly, an acquisition by Kraft Foods in the 1990s saw operations moved to Europe and the factory finally closed in 2005. Fast forward to today, and we’ve completed our transformation here. Our phased approach saw us first create the Care Village which was delivered in partnership with Springfield Healthcare, followed by The Residence. Working with PJ Livesey, we turned this former 160,000 sq ft multi-storey factory space into 163 apartments and a commercial unit, as well as creating The Clock Tower - 21 new apartments and the restoration of the site’s much-loved clock. Next came The Liquor Store. HBD sold this 20,000 sq ft space to a local developer, and worked with them to devise a proposition for the building which is now home to a café, a dentist and offers flexible office space, while most recently we completed the final phase - a turnkey Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) hospital, for Brainkind with 40 bedrooms (36 beds and a further 4 “step down” assessment flats), therapy and treatment rooms, communal areas, internal courtyards, landscaping and parking.
