Day of Seafarers is annually commemorated every 25th of June by the maritime community, to recognise the contribution that seafarers make to our everyday lives.The role of seafarers often goes underappreciated within the maritime industry and by the general public. Seafarers are an essential component in world trade, keeping the economy moving and delivering the goods and fuels we use every day. They are professionals who operate and maintain cargo vessels and other types of ships. They are generally responsible for the safety and security of their shipmates and the cargo they have on board. They also manage all aspects of a ship's maintenance and repairs, which can be anything from minor fixes to major overhauls. Due to the nature of their work, seafarers are often away from home for long period, and have unfortunately been subjected to poor labour treatment and training. The Day of the Seafarer was established in a resolution adopted by the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila to adopt the revised International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers Convention (STCW Convention). Its stated purpose is to recognize the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole. The resolution "encourages government, shipping organizations, companies, shipowners and all other parties concerned to duly and appropriately promote the Day of the Seafarer and take action to celebrate it meaningfully". #IMO #seafarers #maritime

Over 90% of all cargo moved moves by sea, this currently is circa 11 billion tonnes per year. Without shipping, the world economy, and indeed, the world’s standard of living, would change dramatically. Of course, without Seafarers, there is no shipping!   Seafarers are critical to our way of life and must be lauded for the contribution that they make to all of our lives. They spend a long time at sea, in all conditions and weathers, away from family and loved ones to perform this global service. This has to be recognised, and not only one day a year…..   A career at sea must be attractive to gain the number of professional Seafarers to be able to maintain this way of life. This includes a safe environment to be able to perform their work, free from blame culture and unnecessary criminalisation.   The Marine Industry is facing an intense period of change, probably the most rapid in it’s history, and we, the IMarEST, are here to help and support in the coming transitions and further.   Shipping, per unit of cargo, has three times less CO2 emissions than rail, ten times less than road and eighty times less than air transportation. However, of course, we collectively can, and will, do better to ensure environmental protection is a priority.   Thus, on behalf of the global population, we at IMarEST wish to say thank-you to all Seafarers, of all backgrounds, as you, literally, make our world.   So, as part of our heartfelt thank you, and to reach out with support to those who’s place of work is at sea, we are announcing an imminent new membership structure for those employed at sea to take advantage of, considering the remote working, to enjoy the full benefits of IMarEST membership at a lower cost, some of which are;   Networking Special Interest Groups Dedicated Seafarer area in our newly launched communication platform, called IMarEST Connect. New profession specific Career Development Pathways, which will include both mentoring and training, so support you in your career journey to wherever you wish to take it. Seafarers placement issues. On tonight's edition of our routine discussions, we took time to look at the issues impeding the placement of seafarers ranging from personal constraints, administration delinquency and companies (personnel and systems) factors. The unavailability of the seaman's discharge booklet was a matter of concern as it has impeded the growth of workforce in the industry where companies do not regard the temporal discharge booklets issued by the administration. CHARLES TANKO urged the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency to send out a notice to companies to honour the temporal discharge booklet issued by the administration. #seafarers #lifeatsea #sea #nigeria #marine #maritime

Recognized by the United Nations as an international day of observance, today is Day of the Seafarer – a hugely important occasion where everyone (in maritime and the wider public) can show appreciation for those at sea. With this years theme of #SafetyTipsAtSea, seafarers and seafarer organizations are encouraged to share how they work to enhance maritime safety and security, whether that’s based on equipment being used, advances in training, or generally keeping up to date with ways to stay safe onboard. Given the current geopolitical situations, keeping our seafarers safe has never been more critical. The direct impact of war on shipping routes and port calls are widely known, and industry officials are rightly joining the calls to offer enhanced security to protect those at risk. Day of the Seafarer was established in 2010, with the aim of raising awareness of the vital role that seafarers play.  By now, everyone surely knows that the profession is crucial for global trade, transporting cargoes and keeping the economy moving. This day gives the opportunity to show appreciation and say a very big ‘thank you’ to our seafarers, of who we should be immensely proud. #DayofTheSeafarer #Seafarers #Maritime #SafetyatSea #IMO #SafetyTraining
