One of the biggest lessons I learned early in my career is the importance of falling in line. As a 21-year-old recent college grad, I thought that being a leader meant 'taking the lead' and 'sticking to your guns when the going gets tough.' Little did I realize that if everyone were a leader by this definition, nothing would get done since everyone would want to be the driver and decision-maker. To be a leader, one also needs to learn how to follow and fall in line when appropriate. Check out the three valuable lessons (and stories!) “I want to work at Google!” I said this to my coach as I decided to leave Qualcomm after 11 years. “Why Google?”, he asked. I didn’t really have a precise answer. “Because… you know, it’s Google. Come on!” In my mind, Google was the pinnacle of software engineering. So of course I wanted to work there. Yes, the salary and benefits are good. But that wasn’t the real reason. The “why” question lingered. So I reflected on my reasons… I wanted to work there so I can say “I work at Google”. Make my parents proud. My friends jealous. Not once did I even consider if I would enjoy the work. In short, it was for stature. My Google dream job was not a dream job for me. It was for others. So I let go of this dream. And created a new one. A dream job for me, by me. Centered around leadership, helping people grow, and finding joy in the work. I chased this dream and my career took off! Sharoon wanted to do an MBA, but didn’t want to leave his software engineering job at Microsoft. The solution: the part-time MBA at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. That way, he could continue working while going to class on the weekends. He also used the income from his job to supplement his scholarship - both of which paid for his tuition. He used the part-time MBA to transition to a product management (PM) role. The pros: - He used Booth’s flexible curriculum to pick up classes where he learned PM skills  - He had a mindset shift in how he approached decision-making - He could apply these lessons at work the very next day Thinking of applying for a part-time MBA? I was promoted at Google! 🎉 This milestone also marks my 2-year anniversary in Ireland, and I'm incredibly proud of how much I've grown both personally and professionally. Promos at Google are like rare Pokémon – hard to come by, but all the more precious! Thank you! ❤️ Here's what these two years have taught me about life at Google: 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠: When I first arrived in Ireland, my team covered my back. They even helped me find an apartment (after 5 long months!). They also guided me professionally, offering feedback, coaching, and teaching me the ropes at Google. 𝐃𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚 𝐯𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: TGIT parties, Google the Musical where I performed (with colleagues from over 80 countries!), educational sessions, and even an Executive Education certificate from UC Berkeley (more on that in my next post!) – it's like being back on a university campus!
