Why people hate marketing agencies. (Enjoy my rant.) I could talk about the lack of communication, the over-promising, the over-pricing, and a ton of other things. But, I'm not. I'm going to bring up one specific area that I see most marketers ignore. And it's exactly why they lose more clients than they gain. Dependence upon the client. In other words, they arent proactive. Most agencies will wait for the client to tell them what they want done. "Hey, can we run an ad for Labor Day?" "I was thinking about running a 15% off special, can you guys run an ad for that?" The list goes on and on. This is a result of laziness or a lack of ability. A good marketing agency is constantly creating new offers and pitching seasonal advertisements to their clients. The best agencies don't rely on their client for anything except for a simple "yes" or "no." News flash... People hire agencies so they don't have to worry about marketing. No exaggeration, I hear this complaint from prospects at least 5 times a week. Wanna have a great agency? Wanna have a great business? Stop being lazy. Where do you see your competitors dropping the ball or being lazy?

📌 BE THE PROFESSIONAL When someone pays you to do a service, they arent just paying for the action. They are paying for your brain. (The gamble is hoping your brain is actually worth it.) They are paying for your knowledge. They want you to tell them what to do. They shouldn't have to do anything. Steer the ship.

You're going to see the Agencey model turned inside out in the near future. You are spot on with your analysis Ryan Keys I'm a podcaster and content creator and the typical agency model is "create the content and we will take it from there." - they will sell you a coaching program - they will promise you editing - they will help with social and marketing What they don't do is create the content for you. It's on YOU to give THEM something. I think that's changing and you'll see more agencies hiring "podcast hosts" to save the client the time and budget of learning how to host engaging content. At least I hope so. 🤞

Oooh this is interesting —what about founders that have a hard time letting go of control and need to be part of the process esp at the start? How does one deal with that?

Exactly, Ryan! People hire you so you can do the work for them. So don't just sit back and wait for them to find problems for you to solve.. Get out there and solve problems they don't even realize exist yet. Make your clients' lives as easy and simple as you possibly can. Go above and beyond for your clients and they'll appreciate what you end up doing for them!

I couldn't agree more, Ryan. A marketing agency should be a partner guiding strategy and execution proactively rather than waiting for instructions from the client. This proactive approach not only helps in retaining clients but also enhances the brand image of an agency as thought-leaders who are genuinely invested in their client's success.

Omg yes. Everyday I have clients who come to us and tell us horror stories from other agencies. My favorite is “ I paid for email marketing but they never sent an email because they said I was supposed to give them what I wanted them to send” wtf. It’s a marketing agency. Not a VA agency 🙄
