This past week has been a rollercoaster of emotions for me, and I’m sure many of my colleagues at UKG feel the same way. If you haven’t heard already, UKG announced a 14% reduction in force last Wednesday morning. Plain and simple: layoffs suck. My heart goes out to those affected.
Last year, I was part of a layoff, and I just wanted to share some knowledge that worked for me with those affected by layoffs, whether at UKG or elsewhere.
‼️ Set boundaries with your job search
Take care of yourself, your mental health, and make sure you’re okay before you decide to embark on your job search. It can be tiring and frustrating. Don’t set static goals like “I must apply for 20 jobs every day” because some days you might feel less motivated than others, and it is okay to take a break and come back later.
‼️ Quality > Quantity
While it may feel nice knowing you have applied to a lot of jobs, it can also be demoralizing when you see how many rejections it might bring. For me, I found that I got more recruiter callbacks when I made sure my skills and resume aligned with a job opening. I tried to shoot for an ~80% fit or more, as this would also give me room to grow in a new role.
‼️ Polish your brand
Make sure your LinkedIn profile is updated and polished. Create an appealing headline, update your profile picture, add your skills and achievements, and update your summary to reflect who you are. When recruiters look at your profile, they don’t know what you don’t add to it. Having a good headline and picture will entice them to look at your profile, where (hopefully) you’ll have a summary of your skills and talents.
I could go on with many more points of advice, but I feel like these are some of the most important ones. If you would like to hear more, feel free to DM me.
If you are a job searcher and could benefit from anything I can offer, please do let me know. From a conversation with someone in my network to just a chat, I’m here to help. The job market can be rough, and we all need to support each other.
Stay strong and keep chugging along 🙂
