Truer words have never spoken. I've always been athletic and competitive but in my 40's I set out on a journey with obstacle course racing. I didn't want to do it just to do it and have fun; I wanted to go and be the best version of myself and crush it. At first it was mental and then once you overcame that, you start to see the grit results. Not only beating my age group but also going out and besting those in their 20's and 30's. I trained, I practiced, and I never quit. If the race was a Sprint (3-5 miles), I trained for 7 miles. If the race was a Super (8-10 miles), I trained 12. If the race was a Beast (12-15 miles), I trained 15. If I failed an obstacle, I studied and practiced that obstacle over and over.
Point being, this has been my entire life - how does life work, how does business work, what does success look like and feel like (seek to understand). In life you become who you are by not only mastering your craft but also bringing others along for the ride. Those that lift you up and push you, teach you and sometimes knock you down. Time for self reflection and empathy are critical in your life's journey.
Providing opportunity to others through guidance, influence and experience is what will elevate you ultimately.
Some of my best friends are in the most dangerous rock band in the world, and they still practice every single day. Every time they see my son, they ask him how practice is going and is he having fun.
“To be successful at anything, the truth is you don’t have to be special. You just have to be what most people aren’t: consistent, determined and willing to work for it.”
