One thing that I'm grateful for at MacEwan University is that we get good quality applicants whenever we post for our security services department. Not everyone is the right fit for the role, but that's rarely attributable to the standard of the applicant or new hire. It's just a fact of employment that not all people are suited for all jobs, or even all places. It doesn't negate the skills they have, the experience they bring, or how they're remembered after an interview or even a probationary period. It speaks highly of our institution that we get good people in search of meaningful work in 2024 with all of the volatility that security encounters on a day to day basis. Maybe the security industry can take some credit, too. It's often a thankless role that security personnel fulfill in institutional and even community wellness wherever they work. The expectations placed on them are often out of step with the legal authorities they possess as security agents or even peace officers. The breadth and depth of their expertise and training makes possible what would otherwise be impossible standards to meet. It never seems to bother them the way it would any other professional in any other field.

Those who know me know that my history with Panther Gym goes all the way back to my teenage years, as well as several years as a young adult working as the facility manager and boxing coach. From the 1980s to the 2010s, Panther was my "third place" after home and work. When the gym closed during the pandemic, it was like losing the foundation of who I am as a person, and I'm not too proud to admit that there was a real sense of grief with the closure. You can't spend decades learning life lessons in a place without it leaving an indelible impression on who you are as a person long after you leave it (or it leaves you). Well, I'm happy to say that they're reopening in a new location with a dramatically upgraded facility. Although I'm no longer an employee, I'm pleased to see the old name on a new building and can't wait to see them back in action. Edmonton is a better city to live in with Panther open for business than without the storied gym welcoming one and all into the ring. I expect that the legacy of Panther Gym — dating to the late 1970s and connected to every major (and most minor) sports team in this city — will be stewarded into the future with the respect and care the brand so richly deserves. I had three interviews during my application process with MacEwan University. In all three interviews, the topic of community policing was discussed, especially regarding how that model can inform campus security services at MacEwan. This event is an example of community policing applied to a campus setting. I worked alongside the Neighborhood Empowerment Team (NET) when it was first introduced to the Edmonton Police Service in Downtown Division way back when. I was even a crime prevention guest speaker for community safety events they hosted back then, so we're coming full circle with this presentation at MacEwan now that I'm the host and they're my guest speakers. I'm happy to be able to do something like this in a new setting and share my connection to NET with a new group of people. I can now also share what started as an internal event with all of you and open seats to others interested in attending.
