Viva CalleSJ, San Jose’s open streets event, and Viva Parks, the City's series of free community building park events, are proposed to be reduced. The San Jose Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department (PRNS) is taking on one-third of all proposed re-budgeted cuts, and is the only city department seeing core program cuts. This Tuesday, Sept 12 - City of San José Council will be voting on budget changes that impact Viva CalleSJ and Viva Parks. These events link resources, promote economic development, and connect people and neighborhoods. Please consider providing public comment, written or at the City Council meeting this week. Parks and Recreation Departments across the nation often are the first budgets to get cut and the last to be restored. In addition to developing and maintaining parks, PRNS took on food delivery during the pandemic, cleaning and beautification with BeautifySJ, promote parks placemaking and events, operate community centers, and offer accessible activities to youth, seniors, and underinvested communities. Many cuts from the 2008 Recession have not yet been restored, resulting in almost a half billion dollars in deferred parks maintenance needs. San Jose United (h/t Juan Estrada) and Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition have issued Action Alerts to save Viva CalleSJ and Viva Parks. Thank you for your leadership on this pressing issue! This survey is a first step to resolving the creative space crisis in DC. In partnership with other DC agencies, The Business Improvement District (BID) Council, landlords, and other stakeholders, CAH is collecting this information to ensure DC preserves and expands its creative spaces, especially as the city continues its post-COVID pivot. Your honest experiences, opinions, and hopes are necessary to ensure we get this right.
