📢 REGULATORY UPDATE: They're heeeere! After much anticipation, NJDEP's REAL Rule Proposal, which significantly modifies NJ's Land Use Rules, were published in yesterday's NJ Register. The regulations affected include: *Coastal Zone Management (CZM) rules, N.J.A.C. 7:7 *Freshwater Wetlands Protection Act (FWPA) rules, N.J.A.C. 7:7A *Flood Hazard Area Control Act (FHACA) rules, N.J.A.C. 7:13, and *Stormwater Management (SWM) rules, N.J.A.C. 7:8

35 reports of dead birds and fish, and a historic city smelling of diesel… This reeks of an oil spill! But did you smell robbery? Intruders helped themselves to copper from transformers in a disused paper mill near Canterbury in Kent. They removed a bung from the tank and oil leaked out into the drainage system into the river. Thankfully the site owners called in specialist contractors to clean up the river and security on the site has now been ramped up. But it just shows the care that must be taken when acquiring disused industrial sites for development. Here’s two things you can do: ✅ Ensure a risk assessment is carried out ✅ Get up to scratch with any potential environmental risks on your site.

Major improvements In Chicago’s water system are expected in Biden’s 10-year lead pipe removal plan. Efforts to keep lead out of drinking water by implementing restrictions through the Environmental Protection Agency could be getting a huge boost for the residents. It will proceed with the removal of all of the lead pipes across the country over a decade, focusing on locating legacy lead pipes and enhancing tap water sampling. This initiative faces challenges in cities like Chicago, with over 400,000 lead water lines. Commissioner Dr. Andrea Cheng acknowledges the logistical hurdles of replacing 40,000 lead service lines annually seems impossible due to a shortage of resources and f. To replace all lead water service lines in Chicago, an estimated $12 billion and at least 40 years may be required. The city recently secured a $336 million EPA loan for lead mitigation, and Dr. Cheng emphasizes the introduction of robust pipe corrosion controls to minimize lead leaching.
