I am pleased to share our latest research article, officially published in Geosciences. Protective structures are crucial for mitigating debris flow risks, but evaluating their real-world effectiveness is challenging. Our study presents a comprehensive procedure for assessing the performance of these structures when impacted by debris flows. We combined numerical modelling with site-specific conditions of existing barriers along the Hobart Rivulet in Tasmania. Using three-dimensional modelling, we estimated boulder velocities for finite element analyses and developed an interaction model between boulders and I-beam barrier systems. By introducing the failure ratio metric, we enable comparative assessments of five barrier systems, enhancing the understanding of debris flow risk mitigation by considering structural failure and deformability. As part of my PhD research, this study contributes to improving the resilience of protective barriers in Tasmania. ⚛️🌉 Impressive full scale soil structure interaction experiment in the context of earthquake engineering research. Two columns supported on shallow foundations were put to earthquake shaking in a large soil confinement box at the research facilities of the UCSD. 🔥What is the context⁉️ 👨🏻🏫 The engineering design of many bridges use ductility to prevent the collapse of these structures, by designing structural elements that promote the formation of plastic hinges at the ends of columns. The downside of this approach is that the structural elements can be susceptible to damage that can take significant time in having back the bridge for full operation due to inspections and repairs. 👨🏻🎓 A design alternative proposed by research in the design of bridges for seismic areas is the use of columns on rocking foundations. You will look at the influence of large floating developments on flow, waves and morphology as related to coastal flood safety. For this purpose mathematical and numerical modelling will be developed and applied to one or more case studies situated in the North Sea. PhD 2) Floating Eco-Reefs for wave attenuation. This study concerns the 'breakwater' around the floating development. Typical floating, fixed and hybrid configurations will be studied for two typical locations. The near field hydrodynamics, motion, and mooring forces will be assessed using tools like 2D physical model tests, CFD and a 3D basin test at MARIN. Two iterative design cycles are planned in the co-creation process.
