I think all small towns have special traditions. Mine is no different.... in fact, we race wooly worms on a string (yes you read that right... I remember practicing racing them as a child in preparation) to see what our winter was going to look like. This past weekend the wooly worm who won the race, Jeffery, predicted the following for the mountains of North Carolina! THE 2023-2024 Winter Prediction According to Jeffery the Winning Woolly worm: Week One: Colder than Average and SNOW. Week Two: Colder than Average and SNOW. Week Three: Colder than Average and SNOW. Week Four: Colder than Average and SNOW. Week Five: Colder than Average Temperatures and Light Snow. Week Six: Colder than Average Temperatures and Light Snow. Week Seven: Colder than Average Temperatures and Light Snow. Week Eight: Above Average Temperatures and No Snow. Week Nine: Above Average Temperatures and No Snow. Week Ten: Above Average Temperatures and No Snow. Week Eleven: Colder than Average Temperatures and Light Snow. Week Twelve: Colder than Average Temperatures and Light Snow. Week Thirteen: Colder than Average and SNOW. So in summary, according to the science of reading worms, this winter will offer a mean temperature of 27° and that is great for natural snows as well as the manmade variety that ALL of our Southeastern and mid-Atlantic ski areas make. According to the intel shared, we should only see THREE weeks (of the thirteen week winter season) with milder temps and less snow than normal.

We all must overcome so much judgement (or the inclination to judge), fear, and mistrust in the spaces we occupy. These feelings prevent productive conversations between animal welfare advocates and people in industries that use animals. They show up in politics. They exist between organizations taking different approaches to solving the same problem. So this recent talk by Alok was a breath of fresh air. The talk encompassed a range of issues from the beauty of transformations (“transness is an invitation to embracing the infinite possibilities of being human”) to going beyond binaries. But here are a few gems that particularly resonated with me as an animal protection advocate navigating a society built upon the use of animal bodies: “What we do [next] is we look at every single thing we are judging as wrong…as bad…as evil and ask ‘what part of me is in the thing that I judge?’ And then we transform that within ourselves.” “The way forward is to interrogate our judgement, to interrogate our condemnation.
