Sustainability crisis in journalism refers to the erosion of revenue streams, competition from the global social media companies, media takeover by those more interested in profit than informing the public debate, the spread of disinformation, and the deteriorating public trust in the media. The media must be financially independent and viable if it is to address these sustainability challenges.

Stuart Lambert, co-founder of comms advisory firm Blurred, selflessly accepts the blame, on behalf of his own marketing profession, for the divisive confusion around the term "ESG." As a former contributing editor to the American Heritage Dictionary, I am always interested in the difference between what people think words should mean and how they are actually used. Stuart would have made a great lexicographer in correctly observing that "ESG" is used as a catch-all badge to mean "stuff that companies are doing that’s somehow related to environmental or social causes." In other words, pretty useless as a technical signpost to guide a debate. His recommendation? Stop using the term and instead be specific about the actions being described. That tells people what you are actually talking about, and in many cases, strips the discussion of ideological complexity and controversy. Easily the best essay I have seen on the use of the term "ESG", with the clearest diagnosis, and the most sensible proposals for remediation. Worth a read, even if you are not a former lexicographer. #esg #esginvesting #impactinvesting #sustainableinvesting #sustainability

#ESG is a branding abomination, trying to cover way too many bases. As this article articulates well, it is not the concept that is wrong, just the messaging around it. Doing the right thing isn't going out of fashion anytime soon, in fact more and more governments are legislating for it. Small businesses have always supported their local communities and that's why it has been relatively easy for an organisation like MBH Corporation PLC to put 'doing the right thing' at the heart of what we do. Regardless of how people perceive #ESG
