With many national sports organizations and clubs driving a desire to increase participation across all levels, we must all be prepared to ensure that our clubs, facilities, and staff are ready to meet this need both for today and tomorrow. Key events of significance in our region, such as multiple high-profile World Cups, as well as an increase in the profile of local events and competitions such as the National Basketball League (NBL), ASB Classic, National Rugby League and A-Leagues have all made community sport an attractive choice and in turn funnelling people into grassroots sports clubs up and down the country. But are you ready to deal with the demand? Do you have enough staff? Are there enough fields and courts? Do you have the technological resources to deal with this significant uptick in interest? Sport Wales alongside Tennis Wales, Wales Netball and Basketball Wales - Pel Fasged Cyf are delighted to launch the Court Collaboration Scheme for the 2023/24 financial year. The scheme has been established to assist with delivering our shared aim of increasing participation and widening access to our sports for Welsh communities. The scheme will: 🎾 Create a shared commitment to work together to see more people playing our sports in community settings. 🎾 Provide a chance to work differently to enable each sport to grow individually and collectively – a shared place to enjoy three sports in the community. 🎾 Revitalise and unlock the potential of community places to play sport. Our vision is to create inclusive, safe spaces where participation is maximised through good management, community programmes of activity and usage tracking.   To achieve this the Court Collaboration Scheme will provide capital investment (up to 90% of the project cost) for the regeneration of community court facilities that cater for a minimum of two of the collaborating sports (Basketball, Netball and Tennis). All projects supported must commence redevelopment within the 2023/24 financial year. The National Rugby League's inaugural Las Vegas Round attracted over 40,000 fans and showcased rugby league to Americans audiences. This historic event has built the foundations for the NRL to enter the most lucrative sports market in the world. But what should happen next? And how can the NRL use this platform to strengthen the code globally? Capturing attention as a once-off and generating a lasting interest are two different things. Research demonstrates how preferences for sports are formed when they are perceived to satisfy certain wants and needs. Anyone with tween or teenagers, whatever their interest in basketball, even ‘NBA 2K’ at PlayStation 5 level, can usually rattle off a number of the National Basketball Association (NBA) stars. Golden State Warriors legendary point guard Stephen ‘Steph’ Curry I believe is still the most popular NBA jersey purchased in the Australian market, with the Boston Celtics Jayson Tatum - a small forward (at 203cm!!) & the arguably infamous LeBron James now on his popularity heels! Still locally the enthralling National Basketball League (NBL) playoffs came to 5-games and just two points - 83-81 - separating first time NBL champions Tasmania JackJumpers & Melbourne United Basketball Club. It may move the viewing market & future media rights in a positive direction. It certainly caught some attention! Clearly the JJs are one of the most successful new sporting ventures in Australian history. There are now obvious parallels & anticipation with the future Tasmania Football Club & the Devils 2028 highly- desired entry into the AFL - Australian Football League as the ‘national’ 19th team. The new Tasmanian minority & 4th term, Rockcliff Government, (where over the Easter weekend it was affirmed in some MSM that a combination of JLN & elected Independents will ensure supply on most things), they will soon get down to that business around a future new MacqPoint roofed intimate stadium. Alongside navigating the narrow pathway all Tasmanian Govt’s need to take around service delivery & sustainable economic performance. Having closed game 3 with an incredible (and will be infamous) half court buzzer beater by the JJ’s Jack McVeigh in Melbs, then losing a close one in Hobart to have it 2-2, the Jack Jumpers of course have now secured the title. This is HUGE news! As much as I believe that the move to professionalization is needed to move the sport forward, the lack of clubs within certain areas/regions is concerning. As someone who is involved in netball in Scotland, I fear this could have huge implications. Not only at an elite level, but particularly at grassroots, through player pathways, and for umpires and coaches. I am excited to see what the new era of netball brings, however I do hope there are plans in the near future to ensure that the Super League is accessible for and representative of the whole of the UK (including Scotland, NI, the South West, etc). #NetballSuperLeague #SportDevelopment

In an unprecedented move, World Rugby recently assisted in the prosecution of a Queensland man who sent abusive and threatening messages to a match official, following a fixture at Rugby World Cup France 2023. The perpetrator was charged and convicted of using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend persons pursuant to section 474.17 of the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth). As recently highlighted by the Australian Institute Of Sport, the nature of high-performance sport in the modern era is such that an administration’s duty of care now encompasses (at least as a mitigation measure) the protection of players and officials’ mental wellbeing. This extension appears accepted (at least by World Rugby) through prosecutions such as these, given the engagement of an independent third party to monitor players and officials social media accounts for abusive messages at last years tournament. The prosecution, a first for sporting bodies, acts as a clear notice of intention to protect players, coaches, and officials from the “essentially decentralised and self maintained…ubiquitous, borderless and ambient” nature of social media (as eloquently expressed by the High Court in Dow Jones v Gutnick [2002] 210 CLR 575). While the capital required for World Rugby to ensure the prosecution (in some cases) outweighs the applicable penalties, the prosecution serves as a clear indication of the bodies focus moving forward, and commitment to holistic athletic well being. It also serves as a timely reminder for all proponents to remain vigilant in airing any post-match opinions, as the High Court (albeit in defamation proceedings) kindly reminded us: “...having taken the action to secure the commercial benefit of the Facebook functionality, the appellant bears the legal consequences.” https://lnkd.in/gYzCyFDa

Throwback to 2020 when we were promised a full-sized grass sports pitch and a space for the local boxing club when Dublin City Councillors agreed to sell-off two parcels of land at St. Teresa’s Gardens. The plan was for Hines to construct a full-sized GAA pitch for Gaelic football and hurling, which would also have been used for soccer and rugby. Although there are still plans to build a pitch, we cannot keep waiting for years and years – our kids need sporting facilities now. There are already 8,500 kids without a pitch and with the new housing developments, that number will just continue to grow. https://lnkd.in/eHsNr9Kq
