Transparency and vulnerability build trust. When ministry leaders share their own stories and create a safe space for others to do the same, it fosters a culture of trust and openness. Trust is essential for effective ministry, as it encourages individuals to seek guidance and support. Frustration, anger, and hopelessness are often pervasive among those wishing to help in times of crisis. It’s a stark acknowledgment that systems of care and relief efforts are inadequate, and meaningful and accessible solutions remain unclear. Amidst this, the younger generation has led the way in mobilizing masses— whether through organizing food drives, establishing neighborhood support networks, or donating items/ food/ money. At the heart of this lies mutual aid. Mutual aid centers collective power, transformative justice, and liberation through direct action for communities. To those seeking to ground themselves in the origins and urgency of mutual aid, I recommend reading Mutual Aid by Dean Spade. But don’t stop there– support your community with this understanding. Each of us holds the power to resist, demand better systems, and build a more equitable future, starting with the empowerment of our most oppressed and marginalized communities.
