Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It is a day to promote understanding of how systems and actions can impact elder abuse and neglect. This year’s theme is “Spotlight on Older Persons in Emergencies.” It calls upon communities to consider the specific impacts that natural disasters, pandemics or conflicts have on older people. Our Office's From Hate to Hope report identifies the need take a human rights-based approach to emergency planning, including prioritizing inclusive information sharing and rights-protecting mitigation tactics. It is crucial that human rights in B.C.—including the rights of older persons—are upheld in times of crisis. 🌟 Taking a Stand Against Child Abuse 🌟 In light of recent heartbreaking incidents involving the heinous crime of child abuse, it is imperative that we unite in our collective outrage and condemnation. Every child deserves a safe and nurturing environment, and any act of violence against them is abhorrent and unacceptable. I stand firmly against such acts of cruelty and extend my deepest sympathy and support to the affected families. No child should ever endure such pain, and we must do everything in our power to protect and uplift them. Let us be the voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. It's time to raise awareness, support organizations dedicated to child protection, and work together to create an environment where our children can grow without fear. To those who perpetrate such atrocities, your actions are reprehensible and will not be tolerated. Society stands united against you, and justice will prevail. We mock your darkness with the light of unity and resilience. 🕊️ Let us foster a world where the innocence of childhood is preserved, and where every child can thrive in safety, love, and joy. Family violence in our communities is, sadly, all too abundant. It is insidious and leaves life-lasting scars for the victims, both physically and psychologically.
