AIOps | Data Engineering | DevOps | Confidential Computing | Secure AIOps | Software Development | Microsoft | Qualcomm | Samsung
Qualcomm , NXP Semiconductors , Bosch, Infineon Technologies and Nordic Semiconductor are seeding a new company aimed at advancing the adoption of RISC-V. While initially focus is auto as stated by NXP in its statement. There are many interesting speculations comes to my mind. 1. Why to announce a company without name ? Is it for Arm which is going into IPO next month ? Given none of the company names are in headline for anchor investor. After all ARM sued its one of the largest customer/technology partner. And its rumoured licensing directly to device manufacturer may create problem for its semiconductor partner. OR 2. Are we going to see some acquisition through this JV given forming a new company ? and starting a chip design will be a long process and acquisition may provide a much needed base to get started. Remember last year one of the company in JV was interested in consortium for acquisition of ARM so why not acquire some company and get started ASAP. Also a consortium can tackle regulatory issue smoothly given many acquisition in semiconductor area such as Qualcomm-NXP, Nvidia-ARM etc. are blocked recently. If acquisition is a possibility then my guess will be SiFive because of following reason: 1. SiFive recently entered Automotive domain with new processors. 2. If rumoured are believed then SiFive was in discussion with Intel for acquisition and is still open discussing same with other companies. 3. SiFive is leader in Risc-V because it is built by those who designed RISC-V. 4. SiFive CEO is former Automotive division head at Qualcomm. while there are other RISC-V designer as well like Andes Technology Corporation but those do not have any product specific to Auto sector. The thoughts above are personal. #riscv #qualcomm #nxp #bosch #infineon #nordic

🎉 This year marks a significant milestone as we celebrate 30 years of NXP Semiconductors' Chandler Fab serving the semiconductor industry! NXP is a global leader and trusted partner in automotive, industrial & IoT, mobile and communications infrastructure markets. With four wafer fabrication facilities in the U.S., including two in Chandler, Arizona, NXP has been a cornerstone of technological innovation. Let's congratulate NXP for three decades of excellence in semiconductor wafer manufacturing in Chandler! 🌟 Supported by the Arizona Commerce Authority and in collaboration with NXP, Arizona State University has secured a $17.5 million investment. This initiative aims to expand Arizona’s capabilities in fan-out, wafer-level packaging R&D and workforce training. Additionally, it will establish a GaN (gallium nitride) manufacturing and research ecosystem to drive future technology advancements accessible to more industry players. ASU plans to enhance MacroTechnology Works in Tempe with state-of-the-art equipment, focusing on advanced packaging and GaN research pivotal for 6G, IoT, machine learning and beyond. The expansion will foster student opportunities, workforce development through internships, joint university research and next-generation GaN R&D for 6G technology in collaboration with NXP. 🤝 ASU Core Research Facilities look forward to further collaboration with NXP, aiming to advance the semiconductor industry and workforce capabilities. “This expansion enhances Arizona's semiconductor ecosystem,” said Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs. “These capabilities will provide unique training and R&D opportunities, bolstering our workforce and supporting continued industry growth.” The expanded capabilities at MacroTechnology Works in Tempe will play a pivotal role in supporting future growth opportunities within Arizona’s semiconductor ecosystem. ASU's expansion aligns with Arizona’s strategic efforts to establish shared semiconductor research and manufacturing facilities, positioning the state for additional federal investments through programs like CHIPS. “The partnership will not only enhance the educational experience of our students, which is our core mission, but also contribute significantly to the success of semiconductor industry leaders and startup companies in Arizona,” said Sally C. Morton Morton, executive vice president of ASU Knowledge Enterprise. “Packaging represents the final frontier in the manufacturing process, offering immense potential for innovation as we strive to enhance the capacity and speed of semiconductor chips.” #ASUCores #ASUResarch #ASUInnovation #NXP #Semiconductors #ChandlerAZ #ArizonaCommerce #ASU #MacroTechnologyWorks #GaN #6G #IoT #MachineLearning #TechInnovation #ASU #SemiconductorIndustry #ArizonaInnovation #CHIPSProgram #SemiconductorResearch #Semiconductor #Microelectronics #AdvancedPackaging
