While this accomplishment may not directly tie to my professional life, I firmly believe that the lessons learned on the mats resonate deeply with the principles we value in our careers. Aikido instructor George Leonard on mastery: "How long will it take me to master Aikido?" a prospective #student asks. "How long do you expect to live?" is the only respectable response. Ultimately, #practice is the path of #mastery. If you stay on it long enough, you’ll find it to be a vivid place, with its ups and downs, is #challenges and comforts, its surprises, #disappointments, and unconditional joys. You’ll take your share of bumps and bruises while traveling – bruises of the #ego as well as of the #body, #mind and #spirit – but it might well turn out to be the most reliable thing in your life. Then, too, it might eventually make you a winner in your chosen field, if that’s what you’re looking for, and then people will refer to you as a master. But that’s not really the point. Maintaining focus can be our compass in an increasingly disruptive world with high stakeholder demands, keeping the right mind, approach, and intent can increase chances for success and minimize disruptions. It does not just involve fighting but instead training with intention and purpose in mind - both key elements to winning any fight! While success cannot be assured with strict focus alone - maintaining it elevates chances for success significantly. Bring this philosophy into our management practices: focus on doing the right things at the right time with the right intent. Why Aikido is essential for the world today, more than ever! (part 1) "...to injure an opponent is to injure yourself. to control aggression without inflicting injury is the art of peace..." Ueshiba Morihei (founder of Aikido). Aikido doesn't prioritise competition or effectiveness; instead, it emphasises responding to aggression with peacefulness, ultimately aiming for harmony. The lessons of Aikido through BUDO can serve as a source of inspiration for discovering alternative approaches to resolving global differences and conflict resolutions. How is this possible? In its most basic understanding and explanation, and through my interest and exploration with my mother who writes and reads mandarin, we observed that the kanji for "aikido" 合氣道 roughly translates - 合 (ai) means harmony. - 氣 (ki) refers to spirit or energy. - 道 (dō) translates to the way or path. So aikido is “… the way of harmonising/uniting forces..." In this context, the forces being united are not those of friends or acquaintances but rather adversaries who might potentially engage in physical combat. It became apparent that a substantial understanding of anatomy and physics is necessary to safely position oneself against an attacker and effectively employ a technique. Happy to be back in the Aikido dojo last evening. I took a 6-month hiatus from the adult-session training. Aikido is a form of Japanese martial arts which is non-competitive. It is not just about self-defence but practitioners have to demonstrate understanding of techniques and denotes a path of understanding, a way of life. Aikido teaches us the art of 'doing life' by blending with the motion of the universe. It's about harmony, not conflict. Imagine applying this philosophy to your financial journey. It's not about the aggressive pursuit of wealth or the defensive stance against expenses. It's about moving in-sync with your financial goals and nagivating the market's ups and downs. As a Financial Consultant, I've seen how the principles of Aikido can transform financial planning. Aikido emphasises flexibility, control, and anticipation. In finance, these translate to adaptability in changing markets, disciplined investment strategies, and proactive financial planning. It is just like practising Aikido. We learn to face financial challenges with grace and make strategic moves that align with our goals. Ultimately, we want to achieve a state of financial harmony.
