McDonald’s missed its quarterly profit estimates for the first time in two years, due to factors such as budget-conscious consumers and the Middle East conflict affecting international sales ¹. The fast food chain’s global comparable sales growth fell for the fourth straight quarter to 1.9%, below the expected 2.35% rise. CEO Chris Kempczinski noted that consumers are being more discerning with their spending, and McDonald’s results contrast with other fast food chains that have successfully used value menu items to attract customers. Additionally, the company’s first-quarter same-store sales in the U.S. grew 2.5%, lower than the 12.6% growth last year. The size of the depot will also allow us to be more responsive to customer demand by holding a full range of products on the edge of Greater London. “CRISIS? WHAT CRISIS?”– Marks and Spencer Vs the ‘Cost-of-Living Crisis’ is an age-old struggle. But this time, middle-England’s favourite food brand is winning.   Was 2023 the year M&S out Aldi-ed Aldi? Whisper it quietly, but some experts seem to think so. When prices rise steeply, food shoppers go directly to Aldi, or Lidl GB. And, in roughly the same numbers, abandon the likes of M&S and Waitrose & Partners. That has always been the accepted logic in retail. But last year, for M&S at least, the opposite proved true.   As The Grocer noted, “Of all the unlikely stories from the cost-of-living crisis, few match the success of M&S Food.” Just one reason, for the first time ever – the magazine awarded them its coveted ‘Grocer of the Year’ title. Seven major UK supermarkets have added tabs to their websites to help shoppers select British food and drink. Tesco has followed Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Ocado, Co-op and Waitrose in installing ‘British’ and ‘Best of British’ buttons. Looking at whether age is a differentiating factor reveals that older Brits are far more likely than younger consumers to check if the food is ‘British’ when choosing what to eat. While around three in ten consumers over 55 years (31%) take the British-ness of the food into account, only 11% of 18-24-year-olds do the same. In its F2023 results, Greggs, a leading UK food-on-the-go retailer selling sausage rolls, other hot baked goods, and coffee, reported sales growth of 20%, leading the chain to take hold of the top spot in the UK food-to-go breakfast segment.
