I’m quite young but I have experience of about 5-7years that many people my age wouldn’t. If you’re within the age of 18-25, you might want to read this, it would be alittle long but I won’t bore you. 🤗😉 So I’ve worked in so many capacities and while it’s not a one size fits all, I’ll tell you some of the things that has worked for me. In my few years, I’ve served as the host of an online show, I’ve served as a co-presenter of a tv show, I’ve served as a teacher, then, an administrator of a school, I’ve served as a content writer, I’ve served as an administrative assistant and I’ve served as a corporate master of ceremony(Let me stop here)😅. Now, whilst you might be tempted to say; “that’s a lot Nifemi, you won’t have a specialty, Jack of all trade, master of none”. It might interest you to know that the quote is actually… “Jack of all trade, master of none but oftentimes better than master of one” 😎 Please follow me, every single thing I have done has prepared me for this moment. I enter certain rooms and I’m not unsure of my abilities even if I’m quite young (although, imposter syndrome can kick in once in awhile) I know what I know. If you’re in your late teens and early 20s… ~ Gather experience. Gain as much experience as you can by volunteering. No experience is a waste. None at all! I would never have thought that working as a content writer in school would add such colour to my CV now and even become a means through which I actively earn. ~ Do whatever you’re currently doing well. Learn as much as you can. Someone saw me hosting an event some years ago and when I was done, he was so impressed that he asked me to co-host a show with him on NTA. (Whispers… Can I tell you that I actually hosted that particular event for free? But you could never tell). I can accurately tell you some of the most important things a growing business or company would require for sustainability and continuity. Why? Because I have taught in a new school and I taught with so much dedication that I was made the school’s administrator. Learnt on the job, made my mistakes and had my successes. I know what it takes! Be fully aware! ~ Never underestimate yourself, realize that You Are The Value. I’m a Christian and the Bible tells me not to despise my days of little beginnings. As far as I’m concerned, I haven’t even started, this is the beginning of beginning for me but I have learnt and I am learning to carry myself with such grace that recognizes that I’m an asset to any organization but also that I have a lot more to learn and I’m willing to learn and put in the work. I volunteered to serve while I was off social media and it was a sweet experience. Let me give a glimpse of what I enjoyed (Leave the stressful part of working because it can't be compared to the benefits) I will give you 7 reasons why you should be a volunteer because most people are looking for paid work without knowing the power of volunteering. Firstly, I had an amazing team to work with and we joined forces to drive more than 700 registered participants to be part of the Hangout. I learnt to be a leader and the power of a team. This opened me to connect great minds-minds and I was motivated to do more just being in the team. That's not all! I got to learn practical strategies for growth for FREE, I didn't pay for it. See great minds dropping their secrets of growth. As a sharp lady that I am, I took note and immediately added it to my list and it has helped me build capacity. But guess what! I worked till the night before the event but I didn't attend because something so serious came up. But I got lots of gist and I felt like I was there because it was a great success. Do you know why you need to volunteer for roles, events or conferences? I will give you 7 reasons. 📍 It gives you free access to meet people you wouldn't meet normally. 📍 It builds your network. 📍 It gives you the opportunity and platform to grow and build on your skills. 📍 It gives you the opportunity to get FREE value and insights that will be shared. 📍It exposes you to new learning experiences and environments. 📍It gives you the platform to connect with people and be around great minds. 📍It adds to your credibility and builds your CV There are hundreds of events coming up, volunteer to serve in them. 𝙇𝙚𝙩'𝙨 𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙠 𝙑𝙊𝙇𝙐𝙉𝙏𝙀𝙀𝙍𝙄𝙉𝙂… Volunteering is one of the best ways to gain job experiences that are relevant for graduate school. A lot of people who have graduated and probably finished the mandatory National Service (Nigeria), sometimes find it difficult to find a good paying job in alignment to their future interest. Some take other jobs that are not in line with what they want but they just do it for the money. I wouldn’t ask you to quit, but I’d ask you to volunteer. Work with a mentor, an organization, or an experienced person as a volunteer. If you’re paid, great; but if not, work cause you’re the one who needs that more than any other person and who knows, you could get an easy access to a quality recommendation letter. The challenge is a lot of people are focused on the money than on the potential advantage of that volunteer service. The mindset is, “if there is no money, count me out.” While I understand you, you wouldn’t be doing yourself a favor. Please volunteer as much as possible for a short or long time. Make sure that the volunteering experience leaves you well knowledgeable. Those are the things that can score you favorable pints when writing your personal statement or statement of purpose. It will also boost your academic CV. Volunteering doesn’t have to be physical, there are also virtual volunteering opportunities, and these days most companies will agree to have you on their team once they know you will add value and they will likely not pay you enough or at all. Yet, you know that you are the one gaining. Learn all you can learn from that experience. Don’t forget that your time is valuable. So commit to volunteering at profitable places.
