There is a common understanding that Islamic Architecture is about art....same time there is a critique for using Islamic to define particular traditional architecture developed during several centuries in Islamic countries. But the important thing which is not considered in both groups is that Islamic architecture is only a final product but includes the detailed Islamic building codes which shaped this architecture. For example the streets in Islamic cities had detailed codes based on Islamic guidelines, Islamic rules, and Islamic social life and traditions which contributed to the organic shape of these streets. "In 1978, as a young architect with a keen interest in photography, I embarked on a journey of more than three months by car that took me from the Ivory Coast to Morocco. With the aim of rediscovering cultures and traditional architecture in the Sahel and North Africa, this experience raised important questions: how did entire peoples manage to live in harmony with nature before culture was technologized? What lessons can we learn from the way traditional settlements were formed over generations with minimal impact on ecosystems? What design concepts should architects employ to make buildings consume less energy and resources? In short, how can architecture become sustainable?". They also explore Mariam's idea of the “echo”—the similarities between places, cultures and geographies, as well as how places inspire her work: "Ultimately, it’s about understanding that architecture gets its form from climate and geology. If I’m designing in Niger, I can learn from places like Rajasthan, where similar climatic conditions have led to interesting techniques for rainwater harvesting. Similarly, there might be a lot to learn from earth buildings in Tucson, Arizona. I’m less interested in geopolitical divides, like the Global North and South, and more driven by places that have an echo of my own context. It produces a more horizontal way of looking at architecture and a precedent where the global majority are in dialogue with one another and finding solutions based on our contexts."
