One thing I have always been concerned about is the depressingly low number of African people in academia. Only 1% of professors in the UK are Black (Black Africans, Black Africans, Black Caribbeans) Please hear me out! Therefore the number of African professors in the UK could be as low as 0.2% These things matter for two reasons: First, in a world where academia is having a say on major issues (climate change, poverty alleviation, diversity, etc.), Africans risk being completely alienated from those conversations, yet they are the most affected in most instances. Secondly, without seeing top Black academics in different fields, it is extremely difficult to encourage younger people to pursue that route. Remember, mentorship is extremely important in academia, and it is crucial to be mentored by a person who knows, feels, and lives your struggles. Knows your culture and your innate values. Therefore, having few African academics in top universities means that we risk having even fewer African academics in the future! That said, we cannot underestimate the importance of having allies in powerful positions who are not necessarily Africans, in these influential organizations. They actually open doors for Africans and by doing so, the spiral gain starts. We, the upcoming generation of African academics, must ensure that we leave Africa in a better state!

Black History Month is a dedicated annual observance to celebrate and recognize the achievements, history, and contributions of African Americans throughout the United States’ history. It serves as a time to highlight the impact of Black individuals in various fields and promotes a deeper understanding of their experiences. This commemoration transcends a mere acknowledgement of historical milestones; it serves as a conscious effort to enrich the narrative of American history. Beyond its educative dimensions, Black History Month serves as a canvas for reflection and contemplation. It prompts society to reckon with historical injustices and underscores the ongoing pursuit of inclusivity and justice. In essence, Black History Month stands not only as a celebration of the past but also as a commitment to shaping a more inclusive and equitable future. Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in American history that celebrates freedom and resilience. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their emancipation—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It's a reminder of the struggles and triumphs on the path toward equality and justice, and we honor the courage and perseverance of African American ancestors and celebrate their invaluable contributions to our society. Let's use Juneteenth as a time to reflect, educate ourselves, and amplify voices that promote positive change. Together, we can build an inclusive, diverse future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive in our workplaces and communities—that's The Attain Way.

Why are we not doing this in the United States. It makes not sense. We get one month of which most children get minimal or the same information year after year. But there is sooooo much more to learn and know about black history (which IS American history) than just Martin Luther King and Harriet Tubman. The discussions and the learning experience should be life long. Kids need to be able to know and understand the connectivity between their world and what EVERY culture has contributed. It took longer than a month to get to our present, it will take longer than a month to build to our future. So how can our past be relegated to one month (and the shortest month of the year)? It makes no sense to me.

Black History Month Black History Month 2023 so far Being in a British International school, I’ve realised that it is important for students to be introduced to how we think and the knowledge that impacts that. I’ve had some great learning activities, where I’ve asked students, what do you think the richest man in 14th Century looked like? Mansa Musa, king of Mali by the way. Or asking my year 11 students, who are studying Henry and His ministers for GCSE, what do they think Henry’s most famous trumpeter looked like? They don’t expect the moor, John Blanke! It’s been great teaching about diversity in the trenches and the significant contributions of 1.3 million Indian soldiers and the fact that the Kaiser’s elite troops struggled to fight against a division of Senegalese soldiers, (which is in our regular curriculum). This is only the tip of the iceberg, but it is wonderful to expose the contributions that can be hidden by the horrors of slavery and the chains of inequality. The works of Historian David Olusoga has impacted me greatly and this goes beyond the classroom, but in the workplace and personal development. It causes us all to challenge our natural preconceptions about History and the contributions of black people.
