Thriving in the education space with a techie twist and passion for K-12, Higher Ed, and Client Success.
Another successful PCACAC - Potomac and Chesapeake Region conference completed, and as in previous years, I depart feeling energized and eager for what lies ahead! Let’s do this! Key takeaways: 1. The FAFSA crisis poses significant impacts for Fall 2024 and beyond. 2. There’s more work ahead to integrate Direct Admissions into the mainstream and unlock its potential to broaden access for all students, but the future looks promising. ☀️🕶️ 3. The bond betweeen high school counselors and college admissions folks is stronger than ever! 4. Attending a conference in your hometown requires obligatory lunch with family, especially for a Waffle House fix unavailable in Chicago.

Sorry to be a buzzkill, I see this as a nice, yet overdue, step in the right direction to increase accountability for special education program effectiveness, however, I must note two things that stand out to me. 1. The academic proficiency targets seem astoundingly low. For Reading, the goals for 4th grade, 8th grade, and HS are 8%, 9%, and 7%, respectively, and 10%, 5%, and 1% for math. This can’t be right. 🚩This sounds like extremely low expectations and again sends the message that we are okay with failing students with disabilities. Am I wrong? Someone please correct me here. 2. LEAs can end up in the highest category even if they get 0 points on the academic outcomes targets. Why is this okay? Again, I would love someone to check my math and tell me that I’m wrong here too. If I am right, this is not going to advance outcomes for students with disabilities. Lauren Morando Rhim and Lindsay Kubatzky I imagine your research teams are going to dig into this at some point, please share your findings and conclusions if and when you do. I’m tagging some of my current and former LEA leader and director peers because I would love to hear your thoughts. Myron Long Shawn Hardnett Daniela Anello Rachel Crouch Rachel Tommelleo, Ed.D. HISD: Here is today’s quote on HISD performance for the academic year from Superintendent Mike Miles: “…while the results are preliminary, it appears that proficiency will improve in 18 of the 20 exams. Academic gains from 2023 to 2024 were higher than the state gains in all 20 exams, and in most cases by more than five percentage points. According to the district’s assessment team, this has never been done before in HISD’s history. It appears too that HISD will be a huge positive outlier relative to the scores of the other large urban districts in Texas.” It’s one year so no one can claim victory, but wow! What if this coming year: the bond gets passed and we can improve the condition of our schools; most of the tough personnel decisions are behind us as well as most of the cost-cuts; we enter the year with teachers and proncipals who want to be a part of this; and the people of Houston actually start to support the effort. Wow, wouldn’t that be great?! Let’s go, Houston!
