🏗 With buildings being responsible for 34% of global energy demand and 37% of energy-related GHG emissions, they play a major role in tackling the climate crisis. How can you tackle a crisis without understanding its full extent? Stakeholders in the sector—including governments, institutions, and industry professionals—need to know how GHG emissions unfold throughout the buildings' lifecycle. This understanding fosters transformative and effective emissions reduction strategies. Starting today, this year's Sharm el-Sheikh Mitigation Work Programme Dialogue (May 27-29, Bonn) will focus on 'Cities: buildings and urban systems', highlighting the building sector’s potential for enhancing climate ambition. PEEB collaborated with UN Climate Change and BPIE - Buildings Performance Institute Europe to produce the UNFCCC Buildings Monitoring Compendium. Its resources remain as relevant as ever: ambition to act on buildings is growing globally, following initiatives like the Renewables and Energy Efficiency Pledge, the Déclaration de Chaillot, and the Buildings Breakthrough. In a leap towards sustainability, the UK has committed to a net-zero target by 2050, intensifying efforts across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The roadmap draws from existing strategy documents including the Heat and Buildings Strategy, the Scottish Heat in Buildings Strategy, Net Zero Carbon Status by 2030: Public Sector Route Map for Wales, and the Energy Strategy for Northern Ireland. At COP28, all countries committed to doubling energy efficiency improvements by 2030. WorldGBC’s leading role in the Buildings Breakthrough Priority Action 1 was announced last month by Simon Sharpe, Director of Economics, United Nations Climate Champions Team, High-Level Climate Champions. Speaking at our Global Solutions Forum as part of London Climate Action Week, Simon highlighted how the Buildings Breakthrough will help international flows of finance to find their way to the most zero emission and resilient buildings across the world. With our global network of Green Building Councils, WorldGBC will work alongside Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) (hosted by UN Environment Programme) to convene an international working group ‘consisting of national Green Building Councils, key international organisations and countries to develop and build consensus in defining the common principles required for delivery of ‘near zero emission and resilient buildings’. Heres my take on a possible solution , we are all doing it anyway in some form or another , if the Goverment are serious then like the #buildingsafetyfund surely a susainability fund is also available ? how about the idea of a Building Efficiency Emission Zone (BEEZ) for London! This initiative aims to follow the successful footsteps of Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and incentivize property owners to upgrade their buildings to meet higher energy efficiency standards. The idea is to impose a surcharge on non-compliant buildings, encouraging investments in green technology like better insulation, solar panels, and modern heating systems. Imagine the positive impact this could have on our city - a dramatic decrease in carbon footprint, improved air quality, and sustainable practices in construction and maintenance.
