The countdown is on for UNSW's participation at the Times Higher Education Global Sustainable Development Congress, 10-13 June in Bangkok, Thailand. As part of our ongoing commitment to Partnerships for the goals #SDGs, UNSW will lead two discussions: ‘Water, energy, and food goals post 2030: Can carbon be the currency to a just world?’, co-hosted with the UN Development Coordination Office – Asia Pacific and led by UNSW Engineering’s Dr Andrew Dansie.   ‘The last urban migration and a post-SDG agenda for cities: What do we measure and for whom?’ led by UNSW Cities Institute Director Professor Peter Poulet.   We will also be part of a 'how to' session for universities considering taking part in the THE Impact Rankings (my Roman Empire) for the first time, and there for the live reveal of the 2024 rankings, in UNSW's sixth year participating. 🌏 https://lnkd.in/gnZHBTMy https://lnkd.in/gea8HXD6 #GSDCongress #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #THEImpact24

This is a really stimulating new development. "spotlighting the important role communities can play in unlocking a sustainable future." Remember the pandemic. What happens when communities come together to address an urgent need? Responses to Covid revealed the huge wealth of skills, knowledge, and experience in communities. Along with the ability to deliver compassionate help exactly where and when it was needed. (Ewan Aitken and Cyrenians can give many heartwarming examples). It's so frustrating that governments have not fulfilled those pandemic promises to 'build back better'. Instead they have reverted to 'business as usual' as if that is the only kind of economy they can imagine ... Imagine what we could be achieving in adapting to the challenges of climate change if communities were given the go-ahead? Wishing Matthew Hannon and Strathclyde Institution for Sustainable Communities all the very best – and all the very best for our sustainable communities.

🏆 #40 IN THE WORLD: We are excited to share that Griffith University has been ranked 40th globally, up 26 places from last year, in the QS Quacquarelli Symonds Sustainability Ranking 2024. Griffith is 2nd in Queensland overall, and 7th in Australia for its efforts in sustainability. These rankings assess efforts to tackle the world’s greatest environmental, social and governance challenges and the results reflect Griffith’s deeply held commitment to sustainability. In total, the QS Sustainability Ranking 2024 assessed more than 1400 universities, including those in Australia. 🌟 Meet Emmanuel Pauwels 🍃, Member of Living Future Europe's Advisory Board! 🌱 🗣️ We are happy to introduce you to the members of our advisory board, a group of passionate individuals dedicated to shaping a Living Future in Europe. In this on-going series, we'll be shining a spotlight on each member, showcasing their expertise, insights, and commitment to our mission of creating regenerative communities. Emmanuel Pauwels, studied Applied Economic Sciences and worked for 15+ years in a variety of functions and locations in an international company active in the Energy Sector. In 2008 he became passionate about sustainable development and founded Green Living Projects, a green building consultancy based in Barcelona, Spain. He became a LEED AP and worked on some of the first buildings seeking LEED certification in Spain. In 2015 he became a USGBC Faculty, a recognition for his skills as instructor, teacher and facilitator with deep expertise in the built environment. Always looking at what´s beyond, he became involved with the Living Building Challenge certification, obtained Living Future Accreditation and co-founded the Spain Living Future Collaborative in 2016. The renovation of his house in the north of Spain became the first building to be LBC certified in Europe. In 2019, he graduated as a Regenerative Practitioner with the Regenesis Group and continued his learning journey towards regenerative leadership. Reflection from the first SDSN Masterclass. Attending the Sustainable Development Network's master class on the evolution and concept of sustainable development was an enlightening experience. Delving into the historical roots of sustainable development, from the early environmental movements to landmark events like the Brundtland Report and the adoption of Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, provided a comprehensive understanding of how the concept has evolved over time. Exploring the core principles of sustainable development—environmental sustainability, social equity, and economic prosperity—underscored the interconnectedness of these factors in achieving a balanced and thriving society. It reinforced the notion that true sustainability requires a holistic approach that considers environmental, social, and economic factors in tandem. The discussion on challenges and opportunities in sustainable development painted a sobering picture of the obstacles we face, from climate change and resource depletion to social inequity and political will. However, it also highlighted promising avenues for progress, such as technological innovation, collaborative partnerships, and green finance. Personally, this master class sparked a renewed sense of urgency and purpose in me. It underscored the importance of collective action and interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex global challenges. It also served as a reminder of the immense potential for positive change inherent in sustainable development practices. I am inspired to integrate the principles and insights gained into my own work and advocacy efforts. Whether through promoting sustainable practices in my community, advocating for policy change, or supporting initiatives that advance environmental and social justice, I am committed to contributing to a more sustainable and equitable world. #SDSNYOUTH #SDSNNIGERIA

📝 A team at the European School of Science and Sustainability Research (ESSSR) https://esssr.eu/ the UK Consortium on Sustainability Research (UK-CSR) https://lnkd.in/dJbDQVkc and the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP) https://lnkd.in/daB9WAQ has undertaken a study which has investigated the current status of students’ participation in initiatives aimed at the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. 📚 The results of the study have been published in the paper "Fostering Students’ Participation in the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at Higher Education Institutions", which has just been published in the journal Discover Sustainability. The paper can be seen here: https://lnkd.in/dsS_8Bfh 💡 By means of bibliometric analysis, case studies, and a survey involving a sample of students currently attending study programmes at a set of HEIs, this study sheds light on the level of students’ involvement and provides some recommendations on some measures which may be implemented, so as to increase the interest to engage on initiatives on matters related to SD.

Uniting Higher Education, Governments, Industry, and Society for Sustainable Future is the slogan of the Global Sustainable Development Congress to be launched officially after few hours from now! This timely congress brings together 3,000 global thought leaders and innovators to discuss urgent solutions to the sustainability emergency!

It is difficult to explain how hard we have worked for the last couple of years - and indeed how much more there is to do. The University College of Interdisciplinary Learning (UCIL) course, "Creating a Sustainable World" is a labour of love that brings together over 100 voices from policy, practice and the front line of sustainable development and now the voices of thousands of our students. I am so excited for the next phase of this pedagogic adventure - and the change we can make together. #SDG17 #sustainabledevelopment
