Goulburn Community Solar featuring in One Step Off the Grid. The project demonstrates that solar farms do not need to compete with agriculture, but can occupy former industrial sites. Using an industrial site, with erosion issues, buried building waste and covered by invasive species did come, however, with challenges. The transition to a solar farm means that a lot of tidy up is required and this community solar farm has to stem this additional burden. I have an opinion about utility scale solar. In general, I don't like it. Why? Because it eats up great farmland for 35 years or more. Because trees get taken down to put in a solar farm. What? Because Best Management Practices, like Riparian Buffers, native plant plantings and rotational pasteuring are not the norm ..... yet. But putting solar on a retired landfill? ☀ Exciting News! Last night's Town of Middletown, DE monthly meeting marked a pivotal moment as council voted to advance the 𝗠𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 project! This groundbreaking initiative entails the construction of a 3-megawatt solar array, ingeniously floating atop one of the town's wastewater ponds. This project is also set to become Delaware's inaugural floating solar endeavor. We're thrilled to share that DEMEC has 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮 $𝟭𝟮𝟱,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 from the American Public Power Association (APPA), propelling us forward in our mission towards sustainable energy solutions. The benefits of this innovative project are abundant. The concern voiced by advocates revolves around the environmental impact on a valuable forest and grassland area, critical for the migration routes of at-risk species. Navigating Concerns for Conservation: The proposed solar facility has ignited concerns from groups like the BC Wildlife Federation, fearing the potential disruption to the winter habits of elk, deer, and species such as the Lewis’ woodpecker and long-billed curlew. Jesse Zeman, the federation's director, questions the decision to cover productive forest and grassland with solar panels, especially when it serves as habitat for numerous species.
