We need to triple our electricity capacity to meet our emissions goals and growth needs over 30 years. Costing this is hard, but using recent examples of renewable energy project costs, this could cost as much as $50 billion. There are no silver bullets for overcoming this shortfall. While there are a number of funding options available, including by third parties upfront, the cost of infrastructure will always be overwhelmingly borne by taxpayers, ratepayers, or users of the infrastructure. These three groups are in most cases the same people. Notwithstanding this fact, there are benefits to getting third parties (by which we mean any funding from a source other than a New Zealand government, local government or affiliated agency) involved to fund infrastructure: 🔌 It allows access to funds for councils and central government agencies with maxed-out debt. 🔌 It accesses skills and expertise. 🔌 We’ve done this before and it has worked. 🔌 There is plenty of funding available for infrastructure investment globally. An interesting article in PlaceNW about the essential points for the industry from the three main party manifestos. There is an emphasis on battling the housing crisis, Labour & The Conservatives both plan to make first time ownership more achievable whilst the Lib Dems talk about introducing a "Rent to own" model where tenants could own their home outright after 30 years. Unsurprisingly, everybody plans to invest heavily in homegrown energy and with net zero targets looming there's a big emphasis on renewable energy! All 3 parties have structured their manifestos around growth and with construction seen as the barometer of the economy we should see an increase in opportunities across the board. #ConstructionUK #RenewableEnergy #HousingCrisis

CCS projects are not ready to scale and it’s beyond wasteful to put any future taxpayer dollars here. Our best bet now is just to watch the US money $$$ spent in this type of carbon capture to see what it will achieve and invest Canada’s taxpayer dollars in what does work. Especially when our economic prosperity is tied further and further to the success of Nationally Determined Contributions, we need rapid alignment with the growing success and value of nature-based solutions. In the June 2024 edition of Infrastructure Investor, our partner Kevin Atkins shared his insights on the key issues that are hampering the development of successful hydrogen projects: the nascency of the technology and the associated bankability challenges therein.   To ease the transition towards a greener economy, Kevin encourages the UK Government to provide R&D allowances for provable developments in green hydrogen, which produces no emissions.
