The Roland Garros brand strategy: As I attended some tennis matches at Roland Garros this week, I took the opportunity to reflect on the growth strategy of the Roland Garros brand—a brand that is notably impacted by seasonality. Having worked with several highly seasonal brands in the past, including BIC pens during the back-to-school period, MARS chocolate for Easter and Christmas, LIPTON ICE TEA during the summer, PIZ BUIN suncream for the summer season, and PRETTY POLLY tights for autumn and winter, I was able to draw some interesting parallels and insights. From this experience, I've identified three key pillars that can drive the growth of the Roland Garros brand: 1. Maximize Visitor Spending During the Event: The strategic ticketing approach, which includes multiple sessions across different courts and time slots, even night sessions, maximizes revenue. The diverse shopping and dining options at the Roland Garros stadium also enhance visitor spending. A well-curated product assortment ensures availability throughout the event. However, I believe the merchandising strategy could be further refined to encourage more impulse purchases. Additionally, the robust hospitality offerings significantly contribute to increased profits. 2.Increase the Duration of the Event: Extending the event’s timeframe is crucial for seasonal brands. The introduction of the opening week, allowing fans to watch the qualification stages and player practices, is a brilliant move. Year-round hospitality events at the Roland Garros stadium further extend the brand’s presence. There are certainly more opportunities to lengthen the event period beyond just tennis matches. 3.De-seasonalize the Brand: Creating spending opportunities outside the event period is essential. The 'Roland Garros Style' product range ensures brand visibility and sales throughout the year, supported by an online boutique. Strategic partnerships with brands like Lacoste, Lancel, Ladurée, Wilson, and Delsey, which are less seasonal, further enhance this approach. However, the recent partnership with ISDIN suncreams, another highly seasonal brand, seems more beneficial to ISDIN than to Roland Garros. Enjoyed seeing how LVMH maximized their olympic partnership spend by inserting their brand (likely not contractual) in an endemic way where it complemented things. Nothing wrong with that and, with the exception of someone on the development team at the I.O.C., who's surprised? Trays to hand out medals? Why wouldn't they be LV branded? The olympic medals? Made by LVMH jeweler, Chaumet (someone has to make them). Looks like LVMH took advantage, tastefully, where they could. Partnership 101. Given the latest games and degree of commercialization, highly likely to see more brand activation creep into things for Fondazione Milano Cortina 2026 and LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games. Bet on it. Interesting read in The Economist on the paradoxical choice for a luxury conglomerate such as LVMH to sponsor a sporting event more associated with the masses than the upper class. Yet, the move is a clever way to embody the culture and entertainment re-focusing of #LVMH. The Paris Olympics are as much about marketing the City of Lights as they are about the Olympics itself. And both excel at doing this hand in hand.

Decathlon Strengthens European Outdoor Equipment Presence with Bergfreunde Acquisition In a strategic move signed on November 24, sporting goods giant Decathlon aims to provide long-term support to Bergfreunde's leadership, fostering sustained development and growth. The collaboration is poised to deliver advantages to Bergfreunde's dedicated customer base, partners, and internal teams. This acquisition aligns with Decathlon's broader strategy to expand its footprint in the European outdoor equipment sector. Bergfreunde, with an established presence in 11 European countries, becomes a key asset in this expansion, boasting a stronghold in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, France, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the UK, complemented by its European e-commerce platform. Decathlon's decision to acquire Bergfreunde also signifies a strategic move to explore various price positions in the market, as Bergfreunde's product offerings are oriented towards premium price points, according to Louise Deglise-Favre, a GlobalData apparel analyst. The acquisition presents Decathlon with an opportunity to tap into new customers through Bergfreunde's fully digital business model, aligning with Decathlon's development strategy. Despite the acquisition, Bergfreunde will remain a subsidiary under its established brand, with no immediate changes to its business model. The current management team will retain their positions, a decision seen as essential to preserve the distinct images of both brands. Our speaker, Patrick Pruniaux, Co-founder & CEO of Sowind group* ( Ulysse Nardin & Girard-Perregaux ) will be present for our exceptional event on November Friday 17th, 2023 during Dubai Watch Week. His professional journey : A watch enthusiast since his teens, Patrick began his career with Diageo in London – eventually moving to Africa and then Chicago. He joined LVMH in Miami in 2000 and rose to become Regional Sales Director for the Wines & Spirits business for Latin America. After gaining an MBA at HEC Paris and the London Business School, Patrick – also a graduate of Stanford Business School – decided to combine his passion for premium watches and sports by becoming International Export Director for Tag Heuer. He held different positions within Tag Heuer and he served as Vice-President Global Sales & Retail from 2010 to 2014, focusing on retail growth, channel optimization and consumer experience & innovation. Patrick was also a member of the LVMH Retail Committee and had a responsibility to coordinate sales strategy between LVMH Watch & Jewelry brands. In 2014, Patrick was hired by Apple, in Cupertino, to prepare the launch of the Apple Watch as a member of the Special Projects team. He was then promoted to the position of Managing Director for UK & Ireland in 2015, and was also a member of the Apple EMEA Executive Committee. During his tenure at Apple UK & Ireland, he led the local launches of several iconic iPhone, iPad and Mac products with the retail, the education and enterprise channels as well as Telco operators. He joined Kering Group in September 2017 as Chief Executive Officer of Ulysse Nardin. In 2018, he became CEO for Girard-Perregaux as well, another brand of the Kering Group. Patrick Pruniaux bought from the Kering group, in January 2022, with a group of investors, the watch brands Ulysse Nardin and Girard-Perregaux, which he had managed for several years.
