Although it’s true that, from 2020 to 2023, total homelessness among Veterans decreased by 4.5%—from 37,252 to 33,574—homelessness among women Veterans actually increased by nearly 24%—from 3,126 to 3,980—according to data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In that same period, the number of unsheltered women Veterans—those living on the streets, in a car or in another unsafe situation—jumped nearly 48%, from 1,464 to 2,165. If you are a woman Veteran not yet connected to VA, you should know that you and your family matter and you deserve a safe place to call home. We know that homelessness doesn’t always look the same for men and women, and so the solution may not be the same. If you are a Veteran who is homeless or at risk of homelessness, call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877-4AID-VET (877-424-3838). Visit the VA Homeless Programs website to learn about initiatives that support safe, stable housing for women Veterans. Thanks to Shawn Liu, LCSW for this great write up! 1 in 3 black children still live in poverty, according to a new report by FPWA. Read more at tinyurl.com/3465wwc9. The report, backed by top civil rights leaders nationwide, compares racial inequities today with statistics from 1963 when Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his famous speech in Washington, D.C. We believe in REAL chances for women this Women's History Month. Having a record should never be a life sentence to poverty. Did you know women with records are 10 times more likely to experience homelessness than those without? A stark reality highlighted in the 2022 Prison Policy Initiative report, showing that reentering society poses greater challenges for women, who are more likely to be homeless than their male counterparts. But there's hope! Right here in McLean County, YWCA's Labyrinth Outreach Services supports women reintegrating after a justice event. We provide more than just transitional housing; we offer a comprehensive support system, including mentoring, transportation, employment coaching, and more, to women transitioning from the Illinois Department of Corrections and McLean County Jail. Our mission is to provide tools and support for women to regain their dignity and independence, and define for themselves what it means to be successful. Your support can change lives. Join us in empowering women to rewrite their stories and build a brighter future for themselves and their families. Together, we can break the cycle of poverty and homelessness for justice-impacted women. Director of Communications, Homeless Programs Office, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs
If we’re going to truly end Veteran homelessness, then we need to end it for all Veterans. But what if the progress we’ve made in reducing Veteran homelessness nationwide hasn’t been felt by all Veterans equally? More specifically, what are the ways in which we need to update how serve women Veterans to be more effective and more responsive to the specific ways that women experience homelessness? We’ve got a lot of work to do.

Veteran Housing Corp could not agree more but would add that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs needs to re-think their approach to homelessness. Once local, state, and federal officials understand that homelessness is essentially, with some exceptions, a symptom of the affordable housing crisis that has plagued America for decades, they will be able focus on solving the problem and not treating the symptom. #affordablehousing #affordablehomes #affordablesolutions #homelessness #homelessnessawareness #veteranshelpingveterans #veterans #veteransaffairs

We set people up for failure when we give more than they can handle. In the case of those struggling w/ homelessness, we set them up for failure when we provide them with housing units without the life skills to maintain them. We are told that services are available to the homeless once they are placed in housing, but two very important details are conveniently left out: 1) U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development—the largest funder of homelessness that distributes most of its homelessness funding through local governments such as counties and CoC's—ceased funding such services in 2013, instead funding housing vouchers only. Here's how this plays out at the ground level. If a client requests services from the non-profit housing them, the non-profit must secure an alternative funding source for those services—very difficult to do—or they must fund those services out of their own pocket which is even more difficult given typical non-profit budget constraints. Thus, the non-profit barely mentions services as they don't have means to provide them. 2) Also as of 2013, the homeless who are placed in housing have the choice as to whether to request services. This rarely happens due to scenario described above AND given that nearly 80% of the homeless struggle with the diseases of mental illness and addiction. Most also struggle with Anosognosia—a deficit of self-awareness... meaning they can't perceive their condition accurately. Here's how this plays out at ground level. A 14-year-long study out of Boston revealed that by placing the homeless in housing—rather than treatment and recovery—saw impressive early results, but by year five, only 36% of the housing recipients remained sheltered and nearly half of the cohort died due to a “trimorbidity” combination of medical, psychiatric, and substance use disorder. Tyler—a former Meth addict who lived in a homeless encampment for six years—explains what happens when we place the homeless in housing without services, including the impacts on the homeless and on their neighbors. https://lnkd.in/emg-PW2a Help us provide meals, essentials, supplies, and advocacy to homeless and disabled Veterans here in Los Angeles, our nations capital of Veteran homelessness. Join and support https://aftp.org before the year ends and let’s END Veteran homelessness in 2024 in Los Angeles. With your help and voice, we will. You should know that in 1888 several wealthy and powerful people donated over 900 acres of land to be a HOME for disabled and homeless Veteran’s. The West LA VA is the National Soldiers Home, Pacific Branch and it’s funded over 1 billion dollars annually with our federal taxes. Why is $50k a year Brentwood school or UCLA prioritized over HOMELESS AND DISABLED VETERANS on their own deed restricted land? The nearly thousand acres and billion dollar annual budget seems to be used for EVERYTHING other than a HOME for disabled and homeless Veterans. It’s outrageous. Before 1971 on any given night 2,000-5,000 veterans called the soldiers home a home. Today, more than 4,000 veterans wake up on curb or street somewhere in Los Angeles, the nations capital of Veteran homelessness. #aftpveterans #aftp #alwaysforthepeople

According to recent estimates, the number of homeless people in Houston was approximately 3,300 in 2023, with a significant percentage from the Black community. Despite this figure seeming small, it becomes alarming when considering the number of people accessing homeless services in 2021, which exceeded 21,000 in Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery counties. Notably, the rates of first-time homelessness are increasing, reflecting a profound socio-economic issue. Organizations such as Bread of Life, Inc., Coalition for the Homeless, A Caring Safe Place, and Hearts of Rescue, are making significant strides in addressing homelessness, providing assistance, and creating opportunities. The initiatives range from serving meals, aiding in healthcare access, providing housing, and running a transitional living facility, among other services. Yet, the gravity of this issue begs the question - are we doing enough to prevent homelessness?
