Can you? You betcha!
There are oodles of things to say about ANY food, without talking about its “nutrition” or “health” properties. That language is too abstract for young children to understand anyways. It doesn’t motivate them to eat any particular foods, and it can even backfire, making those foods less desirable.
The bottom line: we eat with our senses and we eat what we enjoy. Start there.
Explore foods. Call them by their actual names, like “carrots” and “cookies.” Share discoveries about their sensory qualities and features.
Talk about: colours, textures, shapes, sounds, smells, and flavours.
Dive in and explore all the ways that food brings people together. It’s how we connect across families and communities. It’s how we celebrate, embrace our culture and show love and kindness to one another.
Talk about how food connects to: family, stories, memories, community, kindness and love.
Use food as a way to open conversations about our beautiful planet and our relationship with it. Ask questions, like:
How does it grow?
Where is it made?
How does it get to us?
Who helps produce this food for us?
What happens to the food we don't eat?
What else would you add to this list?
If you'd like support in changing the conversation around food in your early years or educational setting, please reach out. I'd love to support you and your team through a professional learning workshop!
