The fine margins between success and failure. Two weeks ago, Gareth Southgate was minutes from losing his job, facing massive criticism, and almost becoming a national villain. His career was on the brink of disaster… but then something incredible happened. Jude Bellingham stepped up. It happened again last night when Ollie Watkins stepped up in the dying minutes to win the game and send them to the finals. Now, Southgate is on the edge of legendary status. If his team wins against Spain in the final, they'll be building statues of him, and "Gareth" will be the top baby's name in England for the next 20 years. Southgate’s journey is a jaw-dropping reminder of how thin the line between success and failure can be. In our careers, we face similar high-stakes moments. Driving back from work yesterday I turned on the radio and the topic of discussion was the impending Euros. More specifically… How England will fare at another major tournament. Not so long ago there were pundits and punters saying the Three Lions were favourites. Now it seems the narrative has changed because nobody thought Gareth Southgate could guide his team past the final 4. There was agreement that England do boast certain world class performers. Yet there were question marks remaining on other areas of the pitch. Personally, I don’t think any team that has won a tournament I’ve watched had had the very best player in every position. Some raise their game and find a new level when it matters the most. That’s why football is a team game. It’s also why the England squad must find a way to drown out the outside noise. Don’t buy in to the hype or the hysteria. Yes, it will be tough but winning is not meant to be easy. The belief to succeed has to come from within the individual and the rest of the camp. A shared bond that builds trust in each other. They will only achieve if they do it together. And together good players can make the greatest team. I love this and very much follow: ""It's an example of personal discipline, it's not expecting somebody else to do your job for you." I tend to think that people who make a mess and don't have consideration for the people who clean it up are not the right people for your business. Two examples come to mind, the first being, I remember being in school (many many moons ago) and another student throwing their bag of crisps over the hall, and left them there because they thought it was funny. For me it wasn't and being big for my age, I made sure they picked it up, they had no consideration for the cleaners who would have to come and clean it, "it is not their job to clean your mess, pick it up, now!" were my words. It is important to have respect for others. The second is whenever I stay at a hotel I try and leave the room as clean as I found it, the bed is made, and all rubbish is in the bin and towels etc where they are supposed to be. I can't have someone clean up a mess I made just because I was staying there. I know they are going to clean the room any way but why not make it as easy as possible for them. There are lots of lessons to be learned from the below.
