“Expect the best, but prepare for the worst” That’s what the doctors said to me last month mere minutes after my first daughter, Olivia, was born. She was born not breathing and had to be ambulanced to UCSF Children’s Hospital where they placed her in a 72-hour cooling treatment to slow down brain development and hopefully allow for her to heal from the trauma of birth. 9 nights in the NICU and one COMPLETELY CLEAR MRI later, the three of us are home and my wife and I couldn’t be happier with our new little family. When I was part of a layoff in October, I made the decision to take time off leading up to her birth, and I’ll forever be grateful to have this time with her and my wife as we navigate the uncertainties that come with first time parenthood.
Congratulations, Sam! We had the same experience with our little one (also named Sam). 10 mins of oxygen deprivation, 72 hour cooling, 9 days in the NICU, clean MRI. Sammy just turned 5 and he is the absolute light of our lives. I hope you take the time you need to care for yourselves. This is the scariest thing.
Congratulations another beautiful child brought into the world 😌👏🏾
Ran into your dad and he showed me some pics! She’s adorable! Wishing you and your family all the best Sam!
Terrifying man. I'm so happy to hear that you're back home with your family and enjoying your intro to parenthood. You're going to do great Samwise!

5moSam - firstly, big congrats! You have a lovely family. My wife and I went through the same thing with our daughter. It's uncanny how similar the experiences are: 1) delivery in SF 2) UCSF cooling treatment for 72 hours 3) over a week in NICU. Glad to hear everything is okay. Our daughter is 9 yo now and she's top of her class in academics, super competitive, and a lovely human being. We think that cooling treatment maybe super-charged her! Enjoy this time - I'll keep an eye peeled for possible opportunities for you. - D
