Like you’ll ever hear someone say that. “Joan, 86, died peacefully, and leaves a gaping hole in the lives of her children , grandchildren and lifelong friends. "Her former colleagues don’t give a damn”. Yep. That’s more like it. In the run up to #iwd2024 in pensions world there will be a lot of talk of the gender pensions gap. Yep it’s shit that women retire with less than half the pension of men. It’s even shitter that 2/3s of pensioners in poverty are women. But what’s the solution? Is it for women to ditch any ideas about caring for their friends and family to focus on their finances? Or as is more likely the case, combine a career with caring? The pensions industry needs to think harder about keeping women in pension schemes at key life moments. Too many women throw their workplace pension out with the baby’s bath water. But the focus can't just be on occupational pensions. It's got to be more about state pension rights. Millions of workers are not saving enough for the future, but it is women in particular who are at the greatest risk of poverty in retirement. Women are more likely to take time out of work to raise children and to have low paid part-time jobs to fit in with caring responsibilities. The average woman has £69,000 in pension savings by 67, while a man has £205,000 — £136,000 more, according to new research by the Pensions Policy Institute and the savings firm NOW: Pensions. Women would have to work about 19 extra years to close this gap. The Sunday Times is calling for changes to plug gaps in the pension system. On International Women’s Day, I am honoured to be named among other remarkable women leaders in the benefits and pensions industry on the Elite Women 2024 list by the Benefits and Pensions Monitor! There is still much work to be done to achieve women’s equality. In the pensions industry, we know that men across OECD countries tend to receive a higher pension income than women, and we at OMERS are doing what we can to bridge this gap by making it easier for women to buy back a leave period, such as maternity leave, with more flexible payment options. ⚠️Attention ladies! Have you started thinking about your pension, and could delaying it be costing you? If you’re suddenly thinking, 'uhh no, I haven’t even considered it!' 😱 Don’t worry! it’s not too late to start. Despite the doom and gloom we often see around this topic, you’ve got time to get a handle on this! Starting, even if later than you’d have liked, is better than burying your head in the sand! There is a gender pensions gap (as if we needed another gap 🙄), and the statistic is women would need to work an extra 19 years in full time employment to build up the same level as pension savings as our male counterparts. Crazy right?! 🤯 This is because if we look at typical working patterns, reduced earnings potential, and often increased time out of the workplace, women are disadvantaged, which means planning for retirement is essential. Many people put it off because it seems like a big task, it’s too complicated or frankly a bit boring! But it really doesn’t have to be and while I’m slightly biased as I’m a bit of a pensions nerd, taking control of your finances is incredibly empowering and it can actually be 😲...fun. To put it simply, you have a choice of what you can do in retirement, and when that retirement can start, the key decision is when you start making worthwhile investments to achieve that. The sooner you start the more choice you have later! This is for financial education, not financial advice. ‘Don’t go to work mummy’ the words my daughter said this morning as I dropped her off! Firstly, I was struck by the worst case of mum guilt! They really know what to say to get you right in the feels don’t they?! Secondly, it made me think about why not going to work just isn’t an option. We all have bills to pay and mouths to feed right? But it’s bigger than that…if I didn’t work it would have a significant impact on my retirement income! The gender pension gap continues to be a huge challenge and although steps in the right direction are being made, it is at a snails pace! We all need to be more proactive in tackling this issue head on to help close the gap not only for ourselves but for the women of the future! Things we can do; ⭐️GET IN- even if you earn below the minimum you can still ask to join your workplace pension scheme ⭐️GET GOING EARLY- start saving into your pension as early as possible ⭐️GET GIVING- put in more when you can afford too ⭐️GET TALKING- If you're in a couple talk to your partner about how you could share or redirect pension saving more equally between you.
