I think the most dangerous thing for marketers today is an artificial fear of failure. The stakes feel high. 👉 Layoffs 👉 Marketers looking for work for 3,6,12+ months 👉 Companies slashing marketing budgets 👉 Marketers asked to do activities “outside their job description” Now feels like a time to “de-risk” marketing. But is this actually what you’re being asked to do? It’s easy to create a false internal narrative based on outside forces. Resist that urge. Now is the time for big bets based on solid marketing fundamentals. Once you have STP that’s working, place a big bet. Today on my run I listened to Neeti Gupta share her experiences along with the journey she is on to transform the Microsoft partnership at VMware on Ultimate Guide to Partnering® podcast hosted by Vince Menzione. So many great sound bites to takeaway and to reshare. As I finished listening to the podcast I was reminded why some partnerships not only work really well but are also really fun…it is when both parties fundamentally believe in the same thing, share similar values and the team is made up of genuine good people - we accomplish great things and have fun doing it! I encourage you to listen to the podcast - it’s full of great advice. Here are a few favorites: Co-sell is the Gateway to building relationships with Microsoft. You need tools to help you do the job right, but tools are not what makes it work - it’s the people. When the data becomes really clean then the people can leverage it to build relationships and unlock revenue potential. (This made me smile as I thought of our shirts we made last year that on the back said “CORE+ The Gateway to Co-sell) Co-sell is an important part of relationship building with Microsoft - if you don’t co-sell - the partnership will fizzle. 3 Key Elements to Unlocking Your Partnership: 1. Build a great team - hire good people- have dedicated focus 2. Understand Microsoft Playbook - align to Microsoft - understand what they care about and speak in their language 3. Hire Experts to complement some of the work you need to do I also loved the advice of start thinking like a CEO. Look left to right and think about the end-to-end journey. Normally with a new technology it would be forward thinking businesses of all shapes & sizes. Not to say there's not smaller forward thinking businesses in these cohorts. This is just different, the largest software businesses in the world are leading through their partner ecosystems. More & more companies are jumping on this train... It's true, the world of Partner Marketing is such an incredible space to build a career. It's often not given the attention (or investment) it deserves but when upwards of 80% of B2B businesses revenue comes from the channel your channel marketing leads are the true rockstars of the organization. The proliferation of SaaS Categories and the resulting SaaS sprawl has left a long tail of trailing suppliers faced with an unpalatable double whammy - the ongoing reduction in customers’ SaaS estates and a simultaneous buying concentration on the big players. The likes of Salesforce, SurveyMonkey, Microsoft, Shopify, Adobe, Atlassian, Dropbox, HubSpot, Zendesk, and Intuit Mailchimp, to name but a few, have already staked out their Category leadership so we argue why, for those not already Category leaders, it’s time to re-think and re-Categorise.
