Does the GCC need more women on boards? As of January 2024, women held just 5.2% of the 5,591 board seats in 752 publicly listed companies across the GCC. The case for increasing female representation on boards in the GCC is compelling. A 2023 report by McKinsey & Company revealed that companies with more gender-diverse boards are 27% more likely to outperform financially compared to those with the least diverse boards. Furthermore, PwC Middle East highlighted that women returning to work contribute around $385 billion to the GDP in the GCC, Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt. Moving the needle on gender representation is challenging but crucial work. One of the first programs I had the privilege to work on was Women for the Board at Westminster Business School. This initiative, spearheaded by Dr. Ruth S. was developed in response to the 2011 UK government-sponsored report – Women on Boards – by Lord Davies, which led to the adoption of a target for female representation on boards in the UK. More recently, I had the honor of collaborating with Jamila El-Dajani and the AmCham Women for Business Committee (WIB) on the WIB x Blanchard Mentorship Program, supporting the career development of women leaders in Saudi Arabia. Having women in leadership positions can significantly enhance organizational success. 

Are women in leadership breaking barriers or just ticking boxes? From South Africa to Mauritius and then to Kenya, I've been fortunate enough to gain a unique perspective on the role of women in leadership within our industry. It's an observation that has both inspired me and highlighted some significant challenges. In Kenya, I've found a more welcoming embrace of women in leadership positions. It's a place where gender diversity is thriving, and women actively shape the industry's direction. This is a stark contrast to South Africa, where the acceptance of women in leadership roles progresses at a slower pace. The slow transformation in South Africa often sees women in leadership positions because they tick the boxes of BEE. In contrast, Kenya exhibits a different dynamic. Leadership roles in Kenya are more women-focused, with a genuine desire to empower and elevate women in the workplace. The challenge, though, is shifting women from traditional office roles to the forefront, especially on construction sites. I remain committed to advocating for and supporting women in our industry. While progress may seem slow at times, we must keep pushing for inclusivity and empower the incredible talent and potential that women bring to the table. #WomenInLeadership #GenderEquality #Leadership #EmpowerWomen

I was truly inspired by Princess Reema bint Bandar's insightful remarks on the crucial role of women in shaping Saudi Arabia's economic future. Her emphasis on the need for gender equity and inclusivity resonates globally, as women continue to make remarkable strides in various fields. It's heartening to witness Saudi Arabia ranking first in economic and social progress for women according to the The World Bank. The increasing number of women receiving advanced degrees, enrolling in STEM, and owning small and medium-sized start-up companies is indeed a testament to the transformative changes happening in the Kingdom. However, Princess Reema rightly points out that there's still work to be done, especially in addressing the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles. It's an observation I've also made, where the percentages decrease as one moves up the hierarchy. Organizations claiming an inclusive culture should pay attention to these numbers and strive for equal representation. Having attended exhibitions in Saudi Arabia, I've been struck by the passion and drive of young women eager to make their mark. Their boldness and hunger for progress are truly commendable. In these women, organizations have a valuable resource – individuals who are not only eager to learn but are also poised to drive positive change. Let us continue to support and champion initiatives that empower women, ensuring that the progress made so far is a stepping stone to even greater. Details are available: https://lnkd.in/gVpMDkPQ Interested local humanitarian organizations are requested to submit their applications not later than 30th June 2024, 5:00 pm. One of the criteria is that the organization has a presence and is active in Barisal or Sylhet divisions of Bangladesh and its origin should be within the mentioned two divisions, and their Head office/principal office must be in those areas. Women led organizations are especially encouraged to apply and women leadership is an asset and priority.
