Attending conferences is a great way to expand your network as an engineer and further your career; curious about what takes place on the inside? In November 2023, Elizabeth Dier, Yash Mehta and Zhuoran Zhao, three students from the #MasterofEngineeringLeadership in #UrbanSystems travelled to Toronto to attend the annual conference of the The Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships, a high-profile event bringing together national and international leaders and experts in the field. One of the highlights for the students was participating in a fireside chat. Each student was paired with an industry leader to discuss three thought-provoking questions about significant issues in private-public partnerships (P3). Elizabeth was matched with Melissa Di Marco, a Partner at Accuracy Canada and Zhuoran, with Gary Quenneville from Green Infrastructure Partners. “Gary was interested in the MEL in Urban Systems program and its combination of technical components and leadership,” says Zhuoran. “We talked about the importance of leadership to ensure collaborative decision making.” Elizabeth made some connections at the conference with her counterparts in health care in Ontario, and she has since hired a consulting firm she met at the event to do a project for Vancouver Coastal Health, where she is the Director of Real Estate. “Progressive P3 was a term much in use, indicating the industry’s desire to rebuild partnerships through greater levels of collaboration," says Zhouran. An article I penned for the Women in Engineering Sydney newsletter has now been posted on LinkedIn. It is a short piece about the career journey which has led me to the fantastic role I am in today!

In the face of the financial storms that swept through 2023, our journey was marked by unforeseen challenges that tested the very fabric of our endeavors. Despite encountering setbacks, it is with immense gratitude and humility that we recognize the invaluable support extended to us by our industry comrades. Clients, with their unwavering trust, became pillars of strength, enabling us to weather the financial tempest. Contractors, standing resilient alongside us, showcased not only their professional dedication but also a shared commitment to overcoming site challenges. Meanwhile, suppliers proved to be invaluable partners resiliently providing options to match the various design permutations we produced. The collective spirit of our industry friends transformed challenges into opportunities, fostering a sense of community that went beyond business transactions. As we step into the New Year, it is with renewed determination and gratitude that we cherish these connections, acknowledging that together, we have not just survived but emerged stronger. May the bonds forged in adversity pave the way for a year of shared successes and prosperity. As such, from all of us at KCLA Engineers, we wish everyone brighter days in 2024.
