Torridge District Council submits revised plans for Appledore Clean Maritime Innovation Centre Torridge District Council has announced the submission of revised plans for the Appledore Clean Maritime Innovation Centre (ACMIC), following a thorough consultation process with the public and stakeholders. The updated application, identified as ref: 1/1179/2023/LA, reflects significant changes based on community feedback and evolving construction cost considerations. Councillor Ken James, Leader of Torridge District Council, commented on the updates: “Whilst this a positive and considered response to public feedback, the revised plans also consider ongoing construction cost inflation. As such, we have looked to improve the efficiency of the building, by optimising the lettable area, reducing ancillary spaces and ensuring that the completed building fully responds to current and future market requirements. We strongly believe that these amendments ensure that we have the right plans for the right location, which we hope will put Appledore and Torridge at the forefront of innovation and investment in clean maritime energy.” The updated plans for the ACMIC are now available for public viewing on the Torridge District Council Portal. It was great to listen in on the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI) and Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) 14th Brunel Lecture Series hosted by Prof. (Dr) Anusha Shah, which focused on the theme of resilience and sustainability in infrastructure development. A few takeaways are listed below: Michelle Meaclem discussed these concepts with reference to the Ngā Ūranga ki Pito-One section of the Te Ara Tupua Cycleway, which will become a core active transport corridor for Wellington and provide resilience to both the adjacent rail and motorway. Also, the importance of early engagement and partnership with Iwi on these critical infrastructure projects Anna Reynolds, Lord Mayor of Hobart, provided interesting insights into resilience, building back better, and retrofitting existing infrastructure to mitigate the impacts of bushfires and the challenges that climate change poses. Harry Stonehill spoke to the skills gap that exists in the sector and the struggles with operating in the rural context. In a future where Australasia will be competing internationally for engineers for the sustainable transition, we must develop this workforce. We can also employ better construction methods e.g., off-site construction and modular designs to become more efficient. Thomas Lee referenced the Sydney metro project, which leverages existing assets and retains the significant heritage value that exists. A dynamic approach to design is required, where appropriate risk assessments and standards can be applied to provide the future resilience we need.
