The chassis market is still looking very steep in terms of looking toward a better tomorrow. The influx of new chassis that do make it to the ports largely manufactured and bought by US trailer companies predominantly come from China. The House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party touched on this particular topic mid last year where they reference China "heavily subsidizing their national champion industries" by what they describe as "selling products into the U.S. for less than the cost of the raw materials used to produce them". This latest news in the FT of disruption for high-profile automotive manufacturers once again highlights the increased need for transparency, effective due diligence and ultimately some tough decisions on where products and materials are sourced from. Concerted efforts by the US appear to be working if this news is anything to go by. With the EU expected to follow suit very shortly it’s a story that’s going to run on. It’s somewhat timely given the delay to voting on CSDDD which has the potential to positively address some of the issues that are linked to international supply chains. Hard to believe that 1 small electronic part led to 1,000s of Volkswagen cars stuck at US customs. There's a great lesson automotive companies can learn from this mistake. You have to map your supply chain, multiple tiers deep. You have to know who your supplier's, suppliers are to keep up with regulations like UFLPA and find hidden risks in your supply chain. Alabama led the country in passenger vehicle exports last year, shipping out more than $11 billion in cars. Alabama surpassed South Carolina, the second highest vehicle exporter, by more than $1 billion, according to World Institute of Strategic Economic Trade, an international trade data and statistics provider. South Carolina exported $2 billion more than Alabama in 2021 and $3 billion more in 2022, but in 2023, Alabama rose to the top. Aerospace products and parts topped $2.1 billion last year, a rise of 23% from the previous year.
