Jessie Shipman doesn’t want to be a cog in your machine. She wants to bring her whole self to work — and build an organization where others can, too. For Jessie, who founded Fluincy after years at Apple, this means offering empathy and autonomy. She learned this leadership style from her favorite manager: a queer woman who may not have anticipated being in a leadership role and had to approach it with intention. It’s led Jessie to think about how she would act if she’d expected to become a leader all along, and she encourages women to adopt an “I am enough” (Kenough?) mindset. “When you’re feeling uncertain, always ask yourself, ‘what would Chad do?’ If you can put on that hat, you’ll almost always find that you’re better prepared and more qualified than you thought you were.” She’s feeling inspired by the leadership of Sam Yarborough, Jen Spencer and Cassandra Gholston, but also by the millions of women who have the grace, empathy, and efficiency that it takes to succeed in the partnerships space. An old coworker recently messaged me saying: "You've changed! you are so much more vocal from when I knew you." He's right. Here's what I used to be like at work: ✅ I always sat at the back of meetings. I never raised my hand to ask or answer questions. ✅ I hardly ever offered to present my own work. ✅ I avoided talking to new people. ✅ I tried my best to not be noticed. ✅ It took a long time, but now I'm more confident and comfortable speaking out. This one has bugged me for a long time. Moving between companies over the years it has taught me a lot about inclusion, or rather, exclusion. I have a different way of working to some people indeed I have different perspectives on leadership and productivity. These I have gained and sharpened over the years via my many different experiences. It’s all part of my acquired diversity. Yet, when I joined companies, I was sometimes been labeled as difficult. Fortunately, those labels dropped once people saw my value and acknowledged how what they thought was difficult in me, was actually the inability or reluctance to change in themselves. We hire diverse talent, and expect them to work to fit in instead of celebrating them for standing out. It takes bravery to be different. The difficulty I experienced in the onboarding phases of my career, has help me to feel what it’s like to be pushed away, not to be accepted, and helps me see how I can do a better job at adapting towards other diverse people, whatever the facet of diversity they bring. Inclusion is a two-way street with both parties, need to recognize adaptation is a necessity. As leaders, if we don’t cherish the differences, we seek to bring into an organization then we are not protecting and growing diversity. Including people is accepting them as they are, including the ‘how they work’ particularly when that is one of the differences your organization could use. It's all about #awareness, and #inclusion. Here's a follow-up take on this #conversation, that takes it out of us-versus-them thinking: The guys are playing golf, and talk business (this is their #commonground and they're excited about it). Sarah isn't there because she chose to be with her kids. While they're playing, some #creative #options and #opportunities come up - many creative ideas come up while NOT at our desks. When everyone is back together, the guys fill Sarah in on their latest ideas, and are open to her #opinion and #contribution. When we learn to own our choices and emotions (#mindfulness), AND use #communicationskills as #speakingup (Sarah - "Hey guys, I'm back, fill me in"), and #activelistening and #askingquestions (guys - "Hey Sarah, this is where we are currently, want to share your view on these ideas?"), we create #strongrelationships, #trust, and #collaboration within the circumstances/situation we find ourselves in. This is not easy, but can be extremely #helpful. Apply this #perspective to the combination of #remoteworking and #wfo. It's all about #awareness (what's our situation?), finding #commonground/ having a #commongoal (where do we want to go?), and #communicationskills (how do we get there together). Power of diversity and fostering inclusion in leadership Last week, I was under my own tremendous pressure to present leadership to nine 12 – 16 year old girls. Drawing conversations as the act of inclusion, listening to empathize, and being present to engage was the hardest thing to do with teenagers, but the experience was rewarding. Thanks Anne Rayner for being the wing man, and the trust in my first effort to facilitate with the girls: Putting values into action. Learning LeanIn girl’s curriculum gave me an entire new perspective to how we can lead engagement, with heart and head. Leading inclusion and equity is powerful. Against a backdrop of unknowns, high potential untapped, the need to be acknowledge, the need to share and be heard, the girls taught us sometime in a world constantly in change: 1.     Realize that #leadership is expandable. There is no one person talking, we can create our own space to speak and be heard. Everyone can be a leader and there are many ways to lead. You can show leadership in big, bold ways, and through the small things you do every day. 2.     As leaders we hold a sense of ownership to listen with intent, respect views and provide time to think. 3.     As a leader we create a sense of trust. In the circle I can be heard. The power of sharing helps us create action and inclusion and unleash our superpowers. We are in this together with values we uphold together to meet our expectations. 4.     We want to feel happy, safe, included and respected Questions there were asked to create a joint vision board of engagement: In this group, we show that we respect each other by ….
