A student-led research project under the guidance of Stanford CARE faculty, Dr. jison hong, is recruiting participants. Stanford’s Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) and the Center for Asian Health Research and Education (CARE) are two organizations committed to advocating for improved access to healthcare for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities. Every community is unique, with its own mental health challenges and needs. This project is interested in understanding the mental health challenges faced by your community, so we are inviting you to participate in a research study. This 42-question survey will take no more than 25 minutes to complete, and all of your individual responses are confidential. If you are over the age of 18 and identify as AANHPI, please consider completing this survey. The results of this survey will be used to improve our understanding of the mental health needs of our community. We will work with our community partners to refocus our efforts on addressing these mental health needs by creating and improving initiatives important to our communities. As a small token of our gratitude and appreciation, a raffle/drawing will be conducted for a chance to win a $50 gift card. If you provide your contact information, you will be entered into a raffle/drawing to be conducted on August 15, 2024 (14 days after the survey is closed) for the $50 gift card. Today's #SAFESpotlight is on Dr. Kelly Ann Renwick, assistant professor in the Appalachian State University Department of Interdisciplinary Studies! Dr. Renwick received a Spring 2023 Student and Faculty Excellence (SAFE) grant to incentivize participation in her study, titled the "High Country Food Insecurity Project." The study seeks to understand the rates of food insecurity, the usage of food assistance programs, and diet-related poor health outcomes among Latino/a/x communities in the North Carolina High Country. According to Renwick, the ultimate goal of the project is to implement a food security intervention that will actively support greater food security and opportunities for previously food insecure households to always fill their kitchens with food. The study will be conducted in three phases: surveys, interviews, and an intervention. Renwick is collaborating with researchers from App State's Department of Nursing, Meredith College's Department of Department of Nutrition, Health, and Human Performance, and the Local Environmental Agriculture Project. The grant allowed the team to purchase 20 $50 gift cards to give to interview participants. "The funding that provided these gift card incentives is going to make a big difference in someone’s life. We are working with people who are food insecure and often have to skip meals or watch their children go hungry. In exchange for hearing their stories and life experiences, we are giving them a $50 Walmart gift card that they can spend on groceries. These gift cards mean a household has an opportunity to fill their kitchen with food," shared Renwick.
