The Governor's delay in increasing food benefits for immigrant Californians aged 55+ is concerning. ❗️ The #Food4All coalition urges the Governor to expand access to food assistance for all, without exceptions. CalFresh plays a crucial role in providing food security to families and individuals. It's essential to ensure adequate funding for this vital program. 🍎 Despite this setback, the San Diego Hunger Coalition remains committed in our fight for food access. ✅ #HungerFreeSD #NoExceptionsNoExclusions #FoodSecurity

Someday, and I hope it’s soon, government officials will come to understand that the provision of food is the smallest investment with the biggest impact. Someday, I hope that government, healthcare, and insurance companies will understand that food resources should be the first line of defense for better education, mental health, and disease prevention. Someday, I hope that hunger is extinct. Until that day, I will continue to fight for food security.
14 million U.S. children - one in five - live in households that struggle against hunger, and we know that child hunger soars during the summer when traditional school meals are unavailable. Every eligible child in the country should have access to Summer EBT, regardless of which state they live in. https://lnkd.in/eJTYfqPK

Food insecurity impacts 13 million children across the nation. With the cost of food on the rise and kids out of school, more families are relying on local food pantries and programs like SUN Bucks, the newest federal food assistance program. Yet, governors in 12 states—including 4 of the 6 states with the highest rates of food insecurity—have opted out of this crucial summer food benefits program, leaving 9.5 million students without access to this critical aid. Programs designed to alleviate poverty and hunger are commonsense solutions to ensure every child and family has the support they need. We are in a hunger crisis and New Yorkers are experiencing food insecurity at a strikingly disproportionate rate. The pandemic caused a drastic increase in food insecurity and the numbers have been getting worse as government support wanes. Since July of 2021, NYS has seen an 87% increase in the number of people without enough to eat over a 1-week period compared to 35% nationwide. Support frontline community food providers as they work to meet the increasing need. https://lnkd.in/ea3Fdj3G

Given increased food insecurity in the state, the 2024 Maryland legislative session presented crucial opportunities to strengthen and expand hunger programs at the state level. Maryland has a particularly short session, with only 90 days from early January to early April. The 500+ bills that passed this year are currently being signed into law by Gov. Wes Moore. The two key priorities for Maryland Hunger Solutions this year were (1) increasing the Maryland SNAP minimum benefit to $95 per month, and (2) implementing universal school meals in Maryland. Learn more in a blog about the key priorities and ways to take action. https://lnkd.in/eSp-J6Fe

In all my years working in the non profit space I have maintained that in general the United States doesn't not have resources, knowledge or capacity problem. Those living in poverty aren't personally failing. We in the United States of America have a systemic access problem! As this relates to food security we should all subscribe to the basic right that "we all deserve to eat"! Hunger is a persistent issue despite food abundance here in the US. I have great respect for the work and writing of Anina Estrem, give this article a read which outlines the framework for food security and where we should begin to find a true solution.
